Higgins Takes Second Place in Bull Riding at Howard College Rodeo
Greyhounds Finish Eighth Overall

BIG SPRING, TX - Dusty Higgins (So., Roswell, NM/New Mexico JC) of Eastern
New Mexico University took second place in bull riding, with an 80 in the long go and a 70 in the short go, at the Howard College Rodeo, Apr. 10-12, in Big Spring, Texas. Higgins was the top finisher for the Greyhounds, who placed eighth overall. The Zias also competed during the rodeo, but did not register a team score.

Higgins scored all 90 of Eastern’s team points with his performance in bull riding. His 80 on the first ride placed him second going into the short go. He remained in second after the short go with a total score of 150. Rusty Lundegreen (Jr., Amarillo, TX/River Road HS) also made the short go for ENMU, recording a 64 on his first ride, before failing to complete his second ride. Bull riding was won by Evan Schmidt from Frank Phillips College, who scored an 83 on his first ride and a 73 on his second ride, to give him a total of 156 points.

Royce Lynch (So., Deming, NM/Deming HS) of ENMU made the short go in calf roping, with a first-run time of 9.4 seconds. In the short go, Lynch ran a 13.1 for a total time of 22.5 seconds, and placed seventh overall. Calf roping was won by Monty Eakin of West Texas A&M University, who ran times of 8.9 seconds and 9.1 seconds, for a combined total of 18.0 seconds.

Jeff Cavey (Sr., Douglas, AZ/Odessa College), also from ENMU, made the short go in saddle bronc riding after he scored a 66 on his first ride. Going into the short go, he was sitting in fifth place. He scored a 64 in the short go, to give him a total of 130 points, tying him for sixth place overall. Saddle bronc was won by J.W. McCuistion of Texas Tech University, who scored 68 on his first ride and 77 in the short go, to give him a final score of 145 points.

Shellie Tixier (Sr. Lindrith, NM/Coronado HS) took third place in break-away roping. Tixier had the fastest time after the long round at 2.9 seconds. She failed to record a time in the short go, but took third place because only two competitors scored a time in the short go. Tixier was not on Eastern’s predetermined list of four cowgirls eligible to score points for the Zias.

Break-away roping was won by former ENMU Zia Ashley Sultemeier, who now rodeos for Clovis Community College. In the long round, Sultemeier clocked in at 3.4 seconds. In the short go, she recorded a time of 3.8 seconds, giving her a total time of 7.2 seconds.

West Texas A&M claimed first place for the men with 255 points. Second place honors went to Vernon College with 190 points. Frank Phillips College finished third with 172.5 points, and was followed by Texas Tech with 135 points. Odessa College took fifth place with 127.5 points, Howard College claimed sixth with 125 points, and Western Texas College was close behind with 115 points. ENMU scored 90 points and New Mexico Junior College scored 50 points. Tarleton State, the only other team to score, put up 45 points.

In other men’s events, John Brunson of West Texas A&M and Derrick Elliott of Frank Phillips took first place in team roping with a combined time of 12.2 seconds (6.0-6.2). Jake Marshall of Western Texas College won bareback riding (64-73--137), while Monty Eakin from WTAMU won steer wrestling with times of 4.8 seconds and 4.7 seconds (9.5 seconds overall).

Tarleton State claimed the women’s team title with 155 points. The TexAnns were closely followed by Vernon College with 150 points. Taking third place was Odessa College with 120 points. Texas Tech claimed fourth with 90 points. Weatherford College followed with 40 points. West Texas A&M took sixth place with 25 points, and Western Texas College was the only other team to score, posting 10 team points.

Megan Davis of Texas Tech won goat tying (8.9-8.4--17.3). Kassidy Boyles of Odessa College took first in barrel racing (16.89-17.16--34.05).

The All-Around Cowboy for the weekend was Eakin from West Texas A&M, who scored 185 points for the Buffaloes. The All-Around Cowgirl was Skye Holman from Tarleton State, who scored 90 points.

The next competition for the Hounds and Zias will be April 17-19 at the Frank Phillips College Rodeo. The event will be held in Pampa, Texas.
