Ian Thurman-Kelly is Named
LSC South Pitcher-of-the-Week
Throws Complete Game in 5-4 Win over 13th-Ranked ACU
PORTALES,
NM - Eastern New Mexico University junior left-handed pitcher
Ian
Thurman-Kelly (5’11”, 175 lbs., Denver, CO/Lamar CC) has
been selected Lone Star Conference South Division Pitcher-of-the-Week
for his efforts during the week ending Apr. 20, 2003.
He pitched in just one game, but threw a complete-game 9-hitter
as Eastern defeated 13th-ranked Abilene Christian University, 5-4, in
the first game of a double-header on Friday, Apr. 18, at Greyhound Field.
ENMU went 1-3 during the week. The Greyhounds dropped a 9-7 game against
in-state rival New Mexico Highlands on Wednesday, Apr. 16, before upsetting
ACU to start a three-game LSC South series. Abilene Christian won the
second game of the series, 19-5, and achieved a 10-5 win over Eastern
on Saturday, Apr. 19, to close out the series. The Greyhounds ended the
year with a 12-39 overall record, including 4-20 in the LSC South.
In the win over Abilene Christian, Thurman-Kelly gave up nine hits during
his 7-inning performance. He struck out two Wildcats and overcame four
walks. The Greyhounds trailed 3-0 and 4-1 during the game, but scored
once in the sixth and three times in the bottom of the seventh to earn
the victory.
His win over ACU was a fitting conclusion to the season for Thurman-Kelly,
who entered the game with a 0-7 record, but had lost six games by a total
of 11 runs. In those six games, he had received just 13 runs of combined
offensive support. His losses included a 5-3 game at ACU, a 3-2 loss against
Tarleton State University and a 2-1 loss at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Thurman-Kelly struck out 30 batters in 59 2/3 innings this season. In
two years at ENMU, he has registered 55 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings pitched.
