Franco Barrero is Selected LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week
Concludes Career with 11 for 17 Performance in Four Games

PORTALES, NM - Franco Barrero (6’0”, 220 lbs., Laredo, TX/Laredo JC), a senior first baseman and designated hitter at Eastern New Mexico University, has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Hitter-of-the-Week for his efforts in Eastern’s four games played Apr. 16-19, 2003. Barrero recorded at least one hit in all four games, and had three or more hits three times. He was 11 for 17 overall (.647) with a run, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly, as he improved his batting average to .339 for the season.

ENMU went 1-3 during the week. The Greyhounds dropped a 9-7 game against in-state rival New Mexico Highlands on Wednesday, Apr. 16, but upset 13th-ranked Abilene Christian, 5-4, in the first game of a Lone Star Conference double-header on Fri., Apr. 18. ACU won the second game of the double-header, 19-5, and achieved a 10-5 win over Eastern on Saturday, Apr. 19. The Greyhounds ended the year with a 12-39 overall record, 4-20 in the LSC South.

Barrero went 4 for 5 against Highlands with one double and an RBI. He was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored in the win over ACU. He singled in the seventh inning, before giving way go pinch-runner Trevor Albritton (Fr., IF, Roswell, NM/Roswell HS), who went on to score the game-winning run.

In the second game of Friday’s double-header, Barrero was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. On Saturday, he went 3 for 5 at the plate in his final collegiate game. Barrero achieved a .331 career batting average in three seasons at ENMU. He attended Laredo JC as a freshman.

This year, Barrero’s .339 average ranked second on the team. He hit 10 doubles, one triple and three home runs, while recording 27 runs and 24 RBIs. He led the Greyhounds with 27 walks and finished his career with 54 walks in 143 games played. He started all 51 games this season at first base or designated hitter.
