McMann is Named Greatest Greyhound and
Mariner is Chosen Greatest Zia for 2002-03

PORTALES, NM - The Eastern New Mexico University coaching staff has selected senior baseball player Dallas McMann (6’1”, 215 lbs., Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) as the Greatest Greyhound of 2002-03 and senior volleyball player Christabell Mariner (5’11”, Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna HS) as the Greatest Zia for 2002-03.

McMann was the catcher for the Greyhound baseball team and Mariner played middle blocker and outside hitter for the Zia volleyball team. McMann and Mariner, both four-year letter winners, received their awards at the ENMU Athletic Banquet in the Campus Union Ballroom on Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2003.

McMann was a key part of Greyhound baseball the past four seasons. He was selected First Team All-LSC South in 2001 and 2002. He also was named to the LSC South All-Academic Team those same years, and was named Second Team Verizon Academic All-District in 2002. He played in 191 of 198 games, including 186 starts, during his four years at ENMU. He qualified for the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll five semesters through Fall 2002.

McMann set the ENMU season record for batting average when he hit .433 in 2002. He finished the 2003 season as Eastern’s all-time leader in career batting average (.376) and career doubles (53). His 21 home runs ranked second all-time. McMann’s other career totals included 154 runs, 143 RBIs, 11 triples and a .587 slugging percentage. Defensively, he recorded 717 putouts, 95 assists, and a .966 fielding percentage in his four seasons with the Greyhounds.

The team leader of the 2003 Greyhound baseball, McMann ranked first on the squad in seven offensive categories: batting average (.367), home runs (8), doubles (18), hits (66), runs (43), RBIs (31) and slugging percentage (.622). He was chosen LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week on Feb. 26, 2002 and Apr. 7, 2003.

Mariner played a vital role on the volleyball team during her four years at ENMU. She received numerous honors during her career, including First Team All-LSC South in 2000, 2001 and 2002. She was named to the First Team Daktronics, Inc., All-Southwest Region squad in 2000, and was a Second Team Daktronics, Inc., All-Southwest Region selection in 2002. She was a member of the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll in Fall 1999 and Spring 2002.

Mariner set ENMU records for career kills (1,695) and kills in a season (575 in 2001). She also recorded the second-highest kill total in school history with 567 during the 2000 season. She finished her career ranked second all-time at Eastern with 471 career blocks, was third with 120 career service aces and ranked fourth with 1,102 career digs. Her 49 aces in 2002 tied for third best in school history.

She was chosen LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week five times, including twice this past season. She was named to several All-Tournament teams during her career. Mariner also helped ENMU reach the championship match of the LSC Tournament in 2001 and the LSC semifinals in 1999 and 2000. She contributed to an overall record of 94-47 the past four seasons.
