Zias Win One Match, Lose Two at Northeastern State Invitational

TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team went 1-2 at the Northeastern State University Women’s Invitational, Friday and Saturday, April 4 -5. The Zias defeated Drury University, 5-3, in the first round on Friday, but lost to Tarleton State University, 5-4, in the second round the same day. The Zias were defeated by the University of Central Arkansas, 6-3, during the third and final round of the tournament on Saturday, leaving the Zias with a 6-5 record on the season.

Against Drury, the #1 Zia doubles team of Lisa Weinman (Sr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa HS) and Bethanie Nix (Jr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith HS) had an easy victory over Danielle Drury and Karen Sayle, 8-2. Eastern’s #2 doubles team of Rhiannon Torrez (Fr., Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park HS) and Janelle Sanchez (So., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola HS) earned a victory over Megan Fraser and Nina Jagasic, 8-2.

The Zias took three out of the five singles matches from DU, while losing only one set. Weinman beat Benchcrown, 6-3, 6-2, at #1 singles. In #2 singles, Nix defeated Kara Sayle, 6-2, 6-3. Torrez battled Jagasic at #3 singles, and prevailed 6-2, 6-0. The #5 singles match was not completed because the Zias clinched the overall match while Torrez and Jagasic were still playing.

Despite dominating all three doubles matches in the second round of play, the Zias lost to conference rival Tarleton State University, 5-4. With the loss, the Zias dropped to 1-4 versus L
SC opponents on the season.

On a high note, Weinman and Nix defeated Rosa Diaz-Guzman and Alicia Cummings at #1 doubles, 9-7. Torrez and Sanchez handled Lauren Barzilla and Corey Seward rather easily, winning 8-5 at #2 doubles. To complete the sweep, Salazar and Kelly won the #3 doubles, 8-1, defeating Kristina Sproat and Crystal Blazek.

Rhiannon Torrez was the only Zia to earn a win in singles play. She did so in the #3 match, beating Sproat, 6-1, 6-4.

On the second and final day of the NSU Invitational, Eastern faced a tough University of Central Arkansas team. Again, the Zias dominated the doubles matches, winning two out three, but had only one victory in singles play. UCA won the match 6-3.

Weinman and Nix quickly won their match against Maja Kevacev and Kirby Crone, 8-1, at
#1 doubles. Torrez and Sanchez defeated Danijela Bogdanovic and Toral Parekh, 8-1, at #2 doubles. UCA’s Milica Radovic and Sanja Stankovic avoided the doubles sweep by defeating the Zias’ #3 team of Salazar and Kelly, 8-3.

Central Arkansas outplayed Eastern in the singles flights, losing only one match. Eastern’s #4 singles player, Janelle Sanchez, played the role of spoiler and prevented the Zias from being swept in singles play with a quick 6-0, 6-0, victory over Blagojevic.
