Jamal Washington Signs with ENMU Men's Basketball Team

PORTALES, NM - Jamal Washington, a 6'3" 210-pound guard from Victor Valley Community College in Victor Valley, California, has signed an athletic scholarship to play for the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team. Washington will be a junior at ENMU during the 2003-04 season.

Washington, from Pomona, Calif. (Chaffey HS in Ontario, Calif.) averaged 15.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this past season as a sophomore at Victor Valley. He shot 45.7% from the field (139 of 304), hit 32.7% from behind the three-point arc (18 of 55) and converted 70.8% at the charity stripe (85 of 120). Washington also averaged 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game for Victor Valley Head Coach Joel Lewis, while earning All-Conference honors.

In high school, Washington played basketball, track and field, and football at Chaffey High School. He was named All-Conference in basketball and track and field.

"He gives us some flexibility," Scanlan said. "He is a true combo guard ... can probably play any of three positions for us. He's a strong physical athlete.

"He's a good ball handler, he can score the basketball when he needs to, and he also has an innate ability to see open teammates, so he distributes the ball well," Scanlan added.

Washington plans to major in Business at ENMU. He recently completed an associate's degree at Victor Valley this summer.

Eastern New Mexico University won the 2002-03 Lone Star Conference South Division title before advancing to the semifinals of the LSC Tournament. The Greyhounds finished the season with an overall record of 20-8, including 11-1 in the LSC South. ENMU won 16 of its last 18 games.
