ENMU (5-3) Downs Crusaders (6-2) for 2nd Time this Fall

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds have been the only team between the University of the Incarnate Word and an undefeated record this season. The Greyhounds pulled away from the Crusaders late in ENMU's season-opener for a 76-62 win at Greyhound Arena. On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Greyhounds stunned the Crusaders again, with a 91-89 win in four overtimes at O'Connor High School in San Antonio, Texas. ENMU improved to 5-3 on the season (4-3 on the road), while UIW dropped to 6-2.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Crusaders, who were 1-0 prior to playing ENMU on Nov. 18. Incarnate Word, which competes in the Heartland Conference, entered the re-match with a 4-0 record against Lone Star Conference teams other than ENMU.

Garland Coleman (Sr., G, Chicago, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor HS) led the Greyhounds with 22 points in Saturday's game. He was 7 of 11 from the field and 7 of 11 at the line. Travazz Buckley (Jr., F, Slidell, LA/Faulkner State College) added 21 points and 11 rebounds in his first game for ENMU. Buckley was 7 of 13 on field goals and 7 of 10 at the line.

Incarnate Word was led by Robert Tovar, with 27 points and 13 rebounds. He also earned four assists, five steals and one blocked shot. Anthony Jackson tallied 21 points and five boards.

ENMU fell behind, 8-1, put rallied for a 27-17 lead with 3:00 left in the opening half. UIW closed the half with a 12-1 run, including a 3-pointer by D' Hudson with no time on the clock. The Crusaders led, 29-28, at the intermission.

The Greyhounds held a five-point lead twice in the second half, but Incarnate Word led by four points after Hudson hit a 3-pointer with 1:11 left in regulation. ENMU rallied for a 61-60 lead, but UIW's Chris Johnson sank one of two free throws with four seconds left to force overtime.

Incarnate Word scored the first five points of overtime for a 66-61 advantage with 2:11 remaining in the first extra period. The Greyhounds rallied and forced another overtime when Coleman sank the first 3-pointer of his career with two seconds left for a 70-70 tie.

Both teams scored 10 points in the second overtime. Jackson hit a shot for UIW with 54 seconds left to tie the game, 80-80. Irshaun Pinckney (Jr., G, Clovis, NM/Clovis HS) had a chance to win the game for ENMU, but his jumper missed as time expired, and the teams advanced into a third extra session.

In the third overtime, both teams scored just four points, as the length of the game took its toll. ENMU trailed 84-83 heading into the last possession of the period. Pinckney was fouled as he launched a potential game-winning 3-point shot with one second left. He sank the first of three free throws, but missed the other two, and the game advanced into the fourth overtime.

Tovar connected on a 3-point shot early in the fourth overtime, as UIW took an 87-84 lead. ENMU moved in front for good, 88-87, on two free throws by Jamal Washington (Jr., G, Ontario, CA/Victor Valley College) with 3:12 to go.

David Hamilton (Sr., G, Grand Prairie, TX/Cisco JC) added a jumper with 1:45 left, giving the Hounds a 90-87 edge. Tovar cut the margin to one point on a basket with 1:05 on the clock.

ENMU maintained its 90-89 lead until the final seconds. Tovar missed a shot for UIW with about three seconds left. Coleman grabbed the rebound, was fouled by Tovar with one second remaining, and gave ENMU a 91-89 lead by sinking the first of two free throws. Incarnate Word missed a lengthy, desperation shot as the game ended.

The contest is believed to be the longest game in the history of both programs. UIW had previously played in a three-overtime game. ENMU's record for longest game was two overtimes.

Coleman not only led the Greyhounds with 22 points, but also recorded seven assists and two steals. His 7 of 11 shooting on field goals matched his stats from Eastern's first game with Incarnate Word, when he tied for the team scoring lead with 18 points. Coleman is now 1-5 on 3-pointers in his career. He was 0 for 3 prior to Saturday's game.

Washington, who also scored 18 points for ENMU in the first meeting, was held to nine points in the re-match. Even so, he contributed five boards, three assists and two steals.

Kennis Green (Jr., F, Houston, TX/Blinn College) tacked on 17 points. He hauled down seven rebounds and had four steals. Pinckney scored 12 points to go with four boards and three assists. Jamaal Hunnicutt (Jr., F, Amarillo, TX/Hill JC) was held to just four points on 1 of 7 shooting, but provided the Hounds with seven boards and two steals.

The Greyhounds were 30 of 76 from the field (39.5%), converted 27 of 41 free throws and hit 4 of 11 three-pointers. UIW was 35 of 78 (44.9%) on field goals and 6 of 13 on 3-pointers. The Crusaders made just 13 of 26 free throws. UIW finished with a 49-46 rebounding margin.

Tovar and Jackson of Incarnate Word were joined in double figures by Hudson, who scored 15 points and dished out five assists, and by Chris Johnson, who recorded 13 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Thomas Onger added eight points for the Crusaders.

Both teams had foul trouble by the end of the game. Tovar's last-second foul was his fifth. Jackson and Hudson also fouled out for UIW. Hunnicutt and Green fouled out for ENMU. The lengthy game also led to 29 turnovers by the Crusaders and 25 turnovers by ENMU.

Eastern will finish a string of eight consecutive road games with a contest at Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Thursday, Dec. 18. Game time is set for 2 p.m. (MST).
