ENMU Women's Tennis Match with ACU Canceled by Rain after Doubles Play

PORTALES, NM – The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis match with Abilene Christian University was canceled at the conclusion of doubles play due to rain. The match will not be resumed or rescheduled. Since fewer than five matches were completed, the overall match did not reach regulation distance and neither team received a win or a loss. ACU was leading 3-0 when the match ended.

ENMU, ranked #23 in NCAA Division II, is 1-0 on the season. Abilene Christian, ranked #7 in NCAA Division II, is 8-1 overall.

All three doubles matches were finished. ACU won #1 doubles, 9-8 in a tie-breaker (7-4), as Eastern’s Lisa Weinman (Sr., Albuquerque, NM/West Mesa HS) and Bethanie Nix (Jr., Spring, TX/Newman Smith HS) gave Lacy Johnson and Kristen Chumley, ranked #10 in NCAA Division II, all they could handle. Weinman and Nix led 3-0 and 4-3, but Johnson and Chumley rallied for the win.

At #2 doubles, ACU’s team of Sarah Taweel and Colleen Reynolds defeated Rhiannon Torrez (Fr., Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park HS) and Janelle Sanchez (So., Albuquerque, NM/Cibola HS), 8-1. At #3 doubles, Rachel Taylor and Lauren Yarbrough of ACU defeated Sarah Salazar (Sr., Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X HS) and Erica Kelly (Fr., Stockton, CA/Tokay HS), 8-4.

The match was initially stopped at about 12:40 p.m. (MST). Efforts were made during the next several hours to dry out the courts, and by late afternoon, it appeared the match might resume. The weather failed to stay clear long enough, however, and a squall of frozen rain at about 6 p.m. (MST) forced the teams to cancel the singles matches.

The Zias return to action on Friday, Feb. 28, when they will play at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, N.M. Match time is set for 10 a.m. (MST). The Zias will continue the road trip at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 10 a.m. (MST).
