Dallas McMann Named First Team All-LSC South
for Third Consecutive Season
Barrero, Macias and Romano Earn Second Team Honors

PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico University baseball catcher Dallas McMann (Sr., 6’1”, 215 lbs., Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) has been named First Team All-LSC South for the third consecutive season, as selected by the LSC South head coaches. ENMU also placed seniors Franco Barrero (DH, 6’0”, 220 lbs., Laredo, TX/Laredo JC), Jerry Macias (RHP, 6’3”, 175 lbs., Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HS) and Steven Romano (3B/SS, 6’3”, 215 lbs., Las Cruces, NM/Onate HS) on the Second Team All-LSC South squad. Eighteen players were selected First Team All-LSC South, with an additional 16 players receiving Second Team All-LSC South recognition.

First Team All-LSC South

McMann ranked first at ENMU this season in batting average (.367), hits (66), homers (8), doubles (18), runs (43), RBIs (31) and slugging percentage (.622). He recorded at least one hit in 39 of 51 games this season. He had a 17-game hitting streak in 2002, and concluded his career with a hit in 145 of 191 games. He started 186 of 198 games the past four years.

He set ENMU records with a .376 career batting average and 53 career doubles. He also set a single season record with a .433 batting average in 2002. He ranked second all-time with 21 career homers, while accumulating 154 runs, 143 RBIs, 11 triples and a .587 slugging percentage. He achieved 717 putouts, 95 assists and a .966 fielding percentage in four seasons at ENMU.

McMann previously earned First Team All-LSC South honors at catcher in 2001 and 2002. He was named LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week on Feb. 26, 2002 and Apr. 7, 2003. He was voted to the LSC South All-Academic Team in 2001 and 2002. McMann was a Second Team Verizon Academic All-District VI selection in 2002.

Second Team All-LSC South

Barrero was named Second Team All-LSC South at designated hitter, but also played at first base this season. He ranked second on the ENMU squad with a .339 batting average and earned two or more hits 14 times. He was chosen LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week on Apr. 21, after recording 11 hits in 17 at bats (.647) during the last four games of his ENMU career.

Barrero played one season at Laredo JC, before transferring to Eastern for his final three seasons. At ENMU, he earned a .331 career batting average, while playing in 143 games, with 140 starts.

He scored 81 career runs and recorded 97 career RBIs. He hit .329 in 2001 and batted .325 in 2002, before achieving a career high for batting average this season. He connected for 30 doubles, three triples and 15 home runs during his career.

Macias was a starting pitcher for the Greyhounds throughout his career. He threw in 52 games overall, with 41 starts. He finished his career with a 12-18 record and 139 strikeouts in 229 1/3 innings pitched. He walked just 73 batters during his career (2.86 per 9 innings), and helped ENMU set a school record with just 145 walks in 2002. He was named to the LSC South All-Academic Team in 2001.

Even when the Greyhounds were unable to provide run support, Macias remained a solid pitcher. He lost four decisions the past two years in which he allowed two runs or less.

This season, Macias was 2-6 with wins over New Mexico Highlands University and Lubbock Christian University. He struck out 26 batters and allowed 15 walks in 29 innings pitched. He also registered 7 hits in 24 at bats on offense in 2003, as he earned a .292 batting average.

Romano, was named to the All-LSC South team as a utility player. He battled back from a shoulder injury this past fall to play in 41 games in 2003. He missed several games early in the season, then played shortstop for most of the year, before returning to his regular position at third base. He earned Second Team All-LSC South recognition at third base in 2000.

Romano transferred to ENMU after redshirting at New Mexico State University in 1999. He completed his career with a .299 batting average in four seasons with the Greyhounds. He played in 177 game, including 168 starts. He earned 304 career assists and 146 career putouts. He scored 103 runs and registered 80 RBIs, to go with 35 doubles, one triple and three homers.

He provided ENMU with a .298 batting average this season, while scoring 21 times. He pounded out seven doubles and one homer, and was credited with 19 RBIs. He went 3 for 3, including a game-winning, 2-RBI single with two outs in the final inning, in Eastern’s 5-4 win over Abilene Christian University on Apr. 18. He recorded two or more hits in 14 games this year.

He hit a career-high .345 in 2000, when he also established career highs with 33 runs, 33 RBIs and 11 doubles. He hit .331 in 2001 and batted .229 in 2002.

LSC South Special Awards

Trey Felan, head coach of LSC South champion Tarleton State, was selected LSC South Coach-of-the-Year, while Joel Robinson of TSU was named LSC South Pitcher-of-the-Year and Brandon McGuire of TSU was named LSC South Freshman-of-the-Year. Travis Denson of West Texas A&M and Brad Massey of ACU were chosen LSC South Co-Players-of-the-Year.
