Stacia Givens, Kayla McKamey Score in Second Half, as Zias Rally Past Southwestern Oklahoma, 2-1

PORTALES, NM - Stacia Givens (Fr., MF, Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) and Kayla McKamey (Fr., MF, Lubbock, TX/Coronado HS) each scored in the second half, leading Eastern New Mexico University to a 2-1 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State University, in a Lone Star Conference match, Oct. 31, at the ENMU Soccer Field. Eastern improved to 3-11 overall, 2-6 in the LSC. SW Oklahoma concluded its season at 2-16-2, while falling to 0-9 in the LSC.

Givens scored at 56:19, when she took a corner kick and sent the ball near the top of the goal. The ball glanced off the hands of SWOSU goalie Lindsey Kurtz and into the net. McKamey scored at 59:49 on a tap-in at the right post. Her shot followed a defensive miscue, when a cross from the right side was misplayed by a defender, and the deflection was partially stopped by Kurtz.

McKamey, who was rushing onto the play, hit the open net from less than a yard out to give ENMU the lead.

SWOSU led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Stacy Lee at 16:02. The goal was scored on a direct kick from about 15 yards out. The Lady Bulldogs never scored again, but mounted an all-out attack in the final 10 minutes.

SW Oklahoma had a couple of quality chances in the second half, but one cross rolled untouched through the 6-yard box, and another attack ended when a shot from six yards sailed over the goal. The Zias also had a pair of scoring chances, but a first-half shot by Anna Funck (Fr., MF, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) slid just wide of the goal and a second-half strike by Givens hit the crossbar.

The Lady Bulldogs outshot ENMU, 12-11. Even so, the Zias held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Kurtz earned one save for SWOSU. Carolyn Vincent (Fr., GK, Denton, TX/Billy C. Ryan HS) registered two saves in recording the win for ENMU.

Eastern will close out the season on Sunday, Nov. 2, with an LSC game against the University of Central Oklahoma. Game time at the ENMU Soccer Field is set for 12 noon (MST).
