Bellum, Weeks named Academic All-Conference
Four other Zias named to Commissioner’s Honor Roll

PORTALES, N.M. — Two Eastern New Mexico University volleyball players have been named to the Lone Star Conference South Division All-Academic Team, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Senior outside hitter Anna Bellum (Albuquerque, NM/Garden City CC) and senior libero Jessica Weeks (Brownell, KS/Garden City CC) were both honored by the conference for their work both on and off the court. Both players were previously named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Volleyball Team.

Four other ENMU student-athletes were named to the LSC South Commissoner’s Honor Roll. Kelley McGinty (Sr., OH, Longview, WA/Whatcom CC), Margie Goble (Sr., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS), Olivia Boan (Jr., DS, Portales, NM/Portales HS) and Kristen Van Wettering (So., OH, Portales, NM/Portales HS) were all honored by the conference for their academics. Bellum and Weeks are also named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll by virtue of their selection to the All-Academic Team.

Abilene Christian University had three student-athletes – Michelle Bernhardt, Lindsey Martin and Kellen Morrow – make the six-player All-Academic Team. Angelo State’s Amber Nelson was the South’s final selection. ENMU led all teams with six overall honorees.

Bellum led the Zias this season with 461 kills to finish fourth in the LSC, and her 3.57 kills per game finished seventh in the conference. Her 942 career kills place her seventh on ENMU’s all-time list. The senior also finished third on the Zias with 412 digs (3.19 per game) in 2004. She was a First Team All-LSC South selection in both 2003 and 2004.

Off the court, she has performed nearly as well, posting a 3.90 grade point average at Eastern while majoring in Spanish. By virtue of her selection to CoSIDA’s Academic All-District First Team, Bellum will be considered for the Academic All-America Team, scheduled for release on Thursday, Dec. 2.

Weeks led the Zias this season with 518 digs, which was sixth-most in the LSC and the sixth-most ever by an ENMU player in a single season. She averaged 3.98 digs per game for the season, and made more than 30 digs in a match on two occasions in 2004, including a career-high 40 against Lubbock Christian University on Sept. 10. The senior was named Honorable Mention All-LSC South as well. In the classroom, Weeks has accumulated a 3.86 GPA as an Economics and Finance double major.

The Zias earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2004, defeating Mesa State College in the first round, 3-2, before falling to regional champion University of Nebraska at Kearney in the second round.
