Schiely named Honorable Mention All-Region
Junior led ENMU with .290 attack percentage

PORTALES, N.M. — Junior middle blocker Lindsay Schiely (Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) has been named Honorable Mention on the 2004 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Southwest Region Team. The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney and 10th-ranked Fort Hays State University dominated the team, with each school having four players selected.

Schiely had a stellar first season with the Zias, finishing second on the team with 398 kills (3.06 per game) and posting a team-leading .290 attack percentage. Her attack percentage was the highest for an ENMU regular since Christabell Mariner hit .304 during the 2001 campaign.

The junior was also a defensive force, helping the Zias to lead the conference with 305.5 blocks and 2.35 blocks per game. Schiely finished third on the team with 111 total blocks, 12 solo, which tied her for fifth in the LSC. Her 0.85 blocks per game was just outside the conference’s top 10. She was named First Team All-LSC South for her 2004 performance.

In ENMU’s first-ever NCAA Tournament game on Nov. 19 against Mesa State College, Schiely posted 25 kills and just one error for a .571 attack percentage in the match. The 25 kills were the most by a Zia in a single match since teammate Anna Bellum (Sr., OH, Albuquerque, NM/Garden City CC) tallied 25 against Abilene Christian on Nov. 1, 2003. Schiely finished with 10 or more kills in 25 of 34 matches this season.

In 2003, Schiely was a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) First Team All-American while playing for Clackamas Community College and was the NWAACC Southern Region’s Most Valuable Player.

Eastern made it to the second round of the NCAAs in its first-ever appearance in the postseason tournament, falling to eventual regional champion UNK. ENMU topped Mesa State in five games in the first round before being swept by the Lopers in the second round.

The Zias landed senior outside hitters Kelley McGinty (Longview, WA/Whatcom CC) and Bellum on the All-Regional Tournament team. Bellum made 25 kills and 22 digs in the two matches, while McGinty notched 21 kills and 31 digs. The Zias finished 25-9 for their 2004 campaign.
