Box Score

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team halted its three-game losing streak with a 67-55 win over Cameron University on Dec. 2 at Greyhound Arena. Heather Brown (So., G, Hereford, TX/Hereford HS) scored 18 points and Tiana Bryant (Jr., P, Roswell, NM/University of New Mexico) added 17 points in just 18 minutes of action, as the Zias led from start to finish.

Laci Lee (Sr., G, Portales, NM/Portales HS) poured in 11 points for the Zias, who improved to 3-3 on the season with the victory. Cameron fell to 1-4 with the loss. Brittany Cooksey, who led the Lady Aggies with 14.0 points per game entering the contest, was held to just two points on 0-for-9 shooting. The Zia defense held CU to just 30.8 percent shooting in the game.

Mika Robertson (Sr., F, Levelland, TX/Midland College) led the Zias with eight rebounds, while Lee grabbed seven and Bryant six. Brown, Robertson and Lee each had three assists in the game, and Brown added three of ENMU’s 11 steals in the contest.

The Zias took a 2-0 lead just 13 seconds into the contest on a Tia Doss (Jr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) layup, and never looked back, holding a double-digit lead for 32 out of 40 minutes in the contest.

ENMU grabbed a 32-15 lead - its largest of the game - with 4:08 to go in the half after two free throws by Riikka Lehtonen (Jr., P, Turku, Finland/Kilgore College), but CU went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:22 to trim the Eastern lead to eight. However, Brown stuck a three-pointer with 1:29 to play in the half, and the Lady Aggies would never get any closer than eight for the remainder of the contest.

Bryant was held to just three minutes in the first half, as she committed two fouls early in the contest and scored just three points in the half. But the junior went 4-for-10 from the field in the second half, scoring six of ENMU’s first seven points.

Chelsea Turner led Cameron with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Katie Stoll tallied 12 off the bench. Melissa Steen grabbed 11 boards for the visitors, and Taylor Campbell posted five assists. The Lady Aggies shot just 4-for-24 on three-point attempts.

The Zias are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 4 when they face off with Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. MST at Greyhound Arena.
