Mikal Monette To Play Basketball at
Eastern New Mexico University
PORTALES, NM — Mikal Monette, a
6’6” 215-pound forward from Albuquerque, New Mexico (Cibola
High School), will join the Eastern New Mexico University men’s
basketball team for the 2004-05 season. Monette, who is transferring
to ENMU from the University of New Mexico, played two seasons at UNM
and will be a junior for the Greyhounds.
Monette played in 20 games, including two starts, as a freshman at UNM,
while averaging two points and two rebounds per game. He averaged one
point and one rebound per game for the Lobos in 11 games as a sophomore.
During his senior year at Cibola HS, he was a McDonald’s All-American,
scored 21.2 points per game and grabbed 9.3 rebounds per contest. He
was chosen State Farm-Albuquerque Coaches Player-of-the-Year for his
efforts.
“Mikal is transferring to us from UNM, where he played in 31 games
the past two years,” ENMU Head Coach Shawn Scanlan said. “He
brings that experience and gives us another player who will be a physical
presence inside. He can score in a variety of ways around the basket
and is able to step out and hit mid-range shots. He is smart and crafty
offensively, and that, coupled with the physicality he brings on defense,
will make him another solid piece of the puzzle for next year.”
Eastern New Mexico University won the Lone Star Conference South Division
title for the second year in a row in 2003-04 and qualified for Eastern’s
first NCAA Division II Tournament berth since 1992-93. The Greyhounds
recorded their second straight 20-win season, as ENMU ended the year
at 20-9 overall, including 10-2 in the LSC South.
