Hernandez Named to LSC All-Academic Team
for Second Consecutive Season

PORTALES, N.M . — Eastern New Mexico University sophomore cross country runner Ricardo Hernandez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad HS) has been named to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team in men’s cross country for the second year in a row. A total of six players were named to the LSC All-Academic Team.

Other athletes named to the All-Academic Team were Sandy Joseph from East Central University, Trent Joseph from Angelo State University, Eric Rivas and Chano Sanchez from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and Steve Sawyer from East Central. Four other athletes qualified for the LSC Commissioner’s honor roll, but were not selected for the All-Academic Team. Trent Joseph was chosen LSC Academic Runner-of-the-Year. Hernandez, who is majoring in Biology at ENMU, has a 3.44 cumulative grade point average.

He also has been successful as a member of the cross country team, earning 14th place at the LSC Cross Country Championships in 2004 and 11th place in 2003. This year, his time over the 8-kilometer course at Durant, Okla., was 26:27.94. He clocked in at 27:08.8 in the 2003 race at the Portales Country Club. ENMU took fifth place at the LSC Championships both seasons.

At the 2004 NCAA South Central Regional in Joplin, Mo., Hernandez was Eastern’s third runner to cross the finish line. He clocked in with a time of 33:57.4 for 46th place out of 104 entrants in the 10-kilometer race. Hernandez also competes in the distance events during the track and field season at ENMU.

He was named to the LSC All-Academic Team for men’s track and field this past spring. Student-athletes qualified for the Commissioner’s Honor Roll by earning at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, with at least 24 semester hours at their current college or university. The LSC South sports information directors chose the All-Academic Team based on the academic and athletic success of players who qualified for the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
