Bellum, Weeks named Academic All-District
ENMU one of eight schools represented on team

PORTALES, N.M. — Two Eastern New Mexico University student-athletes have been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Volleyball Team. Senior outside hitter Anna Bellum (Albuquerque, NM/Garden City CC) was named to the First Team, while senior libero Jessica Weeks (Brownell, KS/Garden City CC) was a Second Team selection.

Only eight teams placed athletes on the team, and ENMU was one of just four schools in the district to have multiple selections. Abilene Christian University led all schools with three players chosen, two of which garnered First Team honors. Harding University and Texas Lutheran University joined ENMU as schools with two players on the team. Thirteen total student-athletes were chosen, seven on the First Team and six on the Second Team.

Bellum leads ENMU this season with 436 kills and is seventh on the Zias' all-time list with 917 kills in her career. She was recently named First Team All-Lone Star Conference South for the second consecutive season, and ranks sixth among LSC players with 3.60 kills per game this season. Off the court, she has performed nearly as well, attaining a 3.90 grade point average at Eastern while majoring in Spanish. By virtue of her selection to the First Team, Bellum will be under consideration for the Academic All-America team, scheduled for release on Thursday, Dec. 2.

Weeks leads all Zias this season with 500 digs, and is seventh on Eastern's all-time single-season list with that total. Her 4.10 digs per game places her in the top 10 in the LSC, and she has made 30 or more digs in a match twice this season - against Lubbock Christian University on Sept. 10 and at West Texas A&M University on Oct. 12. She is now 10th among Zias all-time with 816 career digs. In the classroom, Weeks has accumulated a 3.86 GPA as an Economics and Finance double major. The senior was recently named Honorable Mention All-LSC South as well.

Athletes are judged on their performance both on and off the court, and athletes must have at least a 3.20 GPA in order to be under consideration. The team is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District VI includes Division II, Division III and NAIA schools in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
