UNK halts Eastern in three games
Zias finish 2004 campaign at 25-9

KEARNEY, NEB. — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team put forth a solid effort, but was unable to stop the top-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney in three games (30-20, 30-18, 30-26) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 20. Kearney (38-0) moves on to the Southwest Regional Final against Fort Hays State University, while the Zias finish their 2004 campaign at 25-9.

Kelley McGinty (Sr., OH, Longview, WA/Whatcom CC) led the Zias with 11 kills in the match, as UNK outhit ENMU .348 to .165. Anna Bellum (Sr., OH, Albuquerque, NM/Garden City CC) added nine kills in a losing effort. Margie Goble (Sr., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS) led Eastern with 20 assists, while junior transfer Amber McCarthy (Huntington Beach, CA/Orange Coast CC) tallied 15.

The Zia defense was led by McCarthy’s 10 digs, while Olivia Boan (Jr., DS, Portales, NM/Portales HS) posted nine. McGinty added eight digs in the loss. Lindsay Schiely (Jr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) led the Zias with four blocks, while Goble and Grace George (So., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) posted three blocks apiece.

Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year Erin Gudmundson led UNK with 21 kills, while Erin Arnold added 15. Kelli Bunger and Erin Brosz knocked down 10 kills apiece for the Lopers. Arnold led UNK with 17 digs, while Bethany Spilde made 54 assists in the victory.

It was the final game in the careers of five seniors for ENMU, as Bellum, McGinty, Goble, Jessica Weeks (Sr., LIB, Brownell, KS/Garden City CC) and Emilie Rodman (Sr., MB, Gillette, WY/Western Wyoming CC) wrapped up their ENMU careers with the loss.
