Hinson Named LSC South Offensive Player-of-the-Week
After Hounds Overcome 23-Point Fourth Quarter Deficit

Quarterback Gains 408 Yards of Offense in 38-35 Win at Angelo State

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University senior quarterback Steven Hinson (Olney TX/Olney HS) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Offensive Player-of-the-Week after rallying the Greyhounds from a 23-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Angelo State University, 38-35, in an LSC South road game on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Greyhounds trailed 35-12 with 14:54 remaining, but scored five times the rest of the way to secure the win.

Hinson connected with Derrick Hunter (Jr., WR, Lamesa, TX/Lamesa HS) for the game-winning touchdown on a 31-yard pass with 1:03 remaining. Hinson, who finished with 408 yards of total offense, added a two-point conversion run following the touchdown, as Eastern achieved the 38-35 final score.

His 408 total yards were a career high. He also recorded a career-high 181 yards on the ground to go with 227 passing yards. He had a 66-yard run to set up a field goal in the first quarter, and finished the game with 19 carries. Hinson was 13 of 31 in the air, including 10 completions on his last 19 attempts.

Hinson scored two touchdowns on runs of 5 and 14 yards, and threw two touchdown passes to Hunter of 10 and 31 yards. He drove the Hounds 77 yards in 57 seconds with no timeouts for the winning score.

For the year, Hinson has rushed for 565 yards and has thrown for 816 yards. He is Eastern’s leading rusher and passer, and is the team’s top scorer with 44 points.

His efforts at ASU brought him past the 3,000-yard mark in career total offense. He now has 3,330 yards, with 1,544 rushing yards on 297 carries (5.2 avg.) and 1,786 passing yards with 125 completions on 284 attempts (44.0%). Hinson’s career stats include 18 rushing touchdowns and 16 passing TDs.

The Offensive Player-of-the-Week award was the second for Hinson this season and was his third overall. He first received the honor after rushing 18 times for 135 yards and one touchdown and completing 8 of 14 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-0 win over Angelo State on Oct. 11, 2003. He also earned the award following this year’s season opener on Aug. 28, as he threw for a career-high 271 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 52 yards and one touchdown in a 38-31 loss to the University of Central Arkansas.

ENMU is 3-3 on the season, including 2-0 in the LSC South. The Greyhounds will host arch rival West Texas A&M University in ENMU’s Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. MDT. The contest also will be the annual Wagon Wheel game between the Greyhounds and the Buffaloes. WTAMU won 49-23 last year, but Eastern leads the Wagon Wheel series, 10-7, and the all-time series, 10-8.
