George Named LSC South Defensive Player of the Week
First Time Sophomore has been Honored by LSC
Sept. 20, 2004

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University sophomore middle blocker Grace George (Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) has been named Lone Star Conference South Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday, Sept. 20 by the conference office. It marks the first time in her college career that George has been given honors by the conference.

George led ENMU with 22 total blocks on the week, including 10, one solo, in a crucial victory over St. Mary’s University in the Zias’ final game of the Sleep Inn LSC/Heartland Crossover Tournament. In the victory, the sophomore also posted 15 kills to go with only one attack error for a .483 attack percentage on the afternoon. With the win, Eastern extended its winning streak to seven matches, the longest current streak of any LSC team.

The sophomore started off the week with an 11-kill, four-block performance in a five-set victory over New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday, Sept. 14. She led Zia regulars in that match with a .375 attack percentage.

In the opener of the LSC/Heartland Crossover on Friday, Sept. 17, George made six total blocks to go along with 11 kills in a four-set triumph over St. Mary’s University. She played just one of the team’s three games against the University of the Incarnate Word, posting five kills and two blocks in limited action.

For the season, George is tied with Lindsay Schiely (Jr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) for the team lead in blocks with 42. She is fourth in kills with 73 and third in kills per game at 2.70.

The Zias will look to extend their winning streak to eight when they face off with Wayland Baptist University on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. It will be the final home game for ENMU until Oct. 14. Eastern is 3-0 at Greyhound Arena thus far in 2004.
