Weeks Named LSC South Defensive Player of the Week
Libero Wins Honor for Second Time
Sept. 14, 2004

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University senior libero Jessica Weeks has been named Lone Star Conference South Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 6. It is the second time the senior has won the award in her ENMU career, the last time coming on Oct. 20, 2003.

The transfer from Garden City Community College made 52 digs in Eastern’s two matches last week, averaging 6.50 per game. Her 40 digs in ENMU’s five-set victory on Friday, Sept. 10 over Lubbock Christian University were the most by a Zia since 2000. It was also a career-high for Weeks, whose previous best was 27 at Bellarmine on Oct. 17 of last season.

The Brownwell, Kan. native added 12 digs in ENMU’s sweep of Midwestern State on Monday, Sept. 6. She has a team-best 113 digs so far this season, an average of 4.91 per game, and has only made one ball handling error on the season.

The individual award is the second in as many weeks for the Zias, as senior setter Margie Goble was named LSC South Setter of the Week seven days ago.

The Zias play host to New Mexico Highlands University tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Greyhound Arena at 7 p.m. ENMU went 2-1 against the Cowgirls last season. The Zias dropped NMHU in five sets in the only match between the two squads in Portales in 2003.
