Greyhounds Dominate SW Oklahoma, 39-0
Bud Elliott Wins 200th Career Game

Box score

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University football team dominated from start to finish on Saturday, Sept. 11, to knock off Southwestern Oklahoma State University, 39-0. With the win, ENMU Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott earned his 200th career win. He became the 46th coach in NCAA college football history to reach the milestone.

The Greyhounds (1-2) limited the Bulldogs (0-3) to just 147 yards in the game, only 27 of which were gained on the ground. Adrian Quigley (Sr., SS, Lubbock, TX/Monterey HS) led ENMU with nine tackles in the contest. It was Eastern’s first shutout since Oct. 11, 2003, when the Greyhounds blanked Angelo State, 31-0.

ENMU’s defense was in full force throughout the game, sacking Bulldog quarterbacks 10 times in the contest. B.J. Biggar (Sr., DE, Kemp, TX/Kemp HS) made three sacks in the game, with Quigley and defensive end Olie Fitts (RS Fr., Midland, TX/Midland HS) adding two sacks apiece. Quigley and Biggar each notched four tackles for loss. Jeff Howard (Sr., LB, Portales, NM/Portales HS) scored his first career touchdown in the third quarter, picking off a Ryan Breeze pass and returning it 48 yards for the score.

The ENMU special teams excelled in the game, with Lee Price (So., PK, Holliday, TX/Holliday HS) converting on all three field goal attempts (33, 27, 32). Corey White (Jr., CB, Lubbock, TX/Estacado HS) tied a school record, returning the second half opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.

Senior quarterback Steven Hinson (Olney, TX/Olney HS) ran for 52 yards in the game on six carries, including an eight-yard scamper for a touchdown in the first quarter. He went 3-for-6 in the air, gaining 44 yards. Christian Coronado (So., RB, Levelland, TX/Levelland HS) had the other offensive touchdown for ENMU, an 18-yard run to put the home squad up 17-0 in the second quarter.

SWOSU was knocking on the door to score late in the game, but the Greyhounds got a pair of late interceptions, one by sophomore Michael Fields (Amarillo, TX/Palo Duro HS) and one by senior Ty Touchstone (FS, Lubbock, TX/Monterey HS). Touchstone’s pick came as time expired to preserve the shutout.

The Greyhounds are on the road next weekend, when they take to the road against East Central on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. MDT.
