Greyhounds Defeated in Tight Conference Match

ENMU Falls to No. 10 Midwestern State, 1-0

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (3-4-1 overall, 1-3-0 Southwest Soccer Conference) fell on Sunday, Sept. 19 at the hands of 10th-ranked Midwestern State University, 1-0.

Jimmy Krueger scored the game-winner for the Indians, notching the contest’s only goal at 49:10. Elliott Gallagher passed the ball through the defense from 18 yards out, and Krueger beat a charging Leif Craddock (So., GK, Amarillo, TX/West Texas A&M University) to give Midwestern all the offense it would need in the match.

The Greyhounds played a tightly contested match into the half, as both teams played strong defense through the opening 45 minutes. Marcus Leyva (Fr., D, San Angelo, TX/Central HS) had a pair of quality scoring chances in the second half off indirect kicks, but was denied by MSU goalkeeper David Stockton on the first and missed just wide on the second.

Midwestern had the majority of scoring chances, outshooting the Greyhounds 9-5 in the contest, but Craddock was able to come through with six saves to keep the score tight throughout the match. Krueger led all players with three shots, all of which were on goal, while Leyva’s two shots led ENMU.

Leyva was cautioned in the 38th minute for an illegal tackle, while Midwestern’s Richie Box received a yellow card late in the game, when he unintentionally kicked Eastern’s Martin Gallegos in the head on a high ball. Midwestern committed 15 fouls in the game, while ENMU was whistled for 13.

Sunday’s match was the second game in the history of the program to be played at the ENMU Soccer Field. Eastern defeated conference foe St. Edward’s University at home on Friday, 2-0.

The Greyhounds are back on the road this weekend, as they take on conference foes Northeastern State University on Friday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. MDT and Missouri Southern State University on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m.
