Eastern Downs Midwestern State in Four Games
Four Zias Finish with Double-Digit Kills

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team upped its record to 12-3 on Monday, Sept. 27, defeating Midwestern State in four games (30-27, 30-27, 20-30, 30-22). Four different Zias posted more than 10 kills in the match, as Eastern exacted revenge on MSU, which snapped ENMU’s eight-match winning streak on Friday, Sept. 24 at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament.

Anna Bellum (Sr., OH, Albuquerque, NM/Garden City CC) led the way for the Zias with 15 kills, but had help from a trio of others on offense. Grace George (So., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) and Emilie Rodman (Sr., MB, Gillette, WY/Western Wyoming CC) each posted 12 kills on the night, while Lindsay Schiely (Jr., MB, Portland, OR/Garden City CC) made 11 of her own.

The ENMU defense had five different players notch 10 or more digs in the match, led by Bellum with 16. Kelley McGinty (Sr., OH, Longview, WA/Whatcom CC), Margie Goble (Sr., S, San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS), Olivia Boan (Jr., DS, Portales, NM/Portales HS) and Jessica Weeks (Sr., LIB, Brownwell, KS/Garden City CC) were all in double figures for the Zias.

Eastern also made seven blocks on the evening without registering a blocking error. George led the way with six total blocks (two solo). Goble made 43 assists for ENMU, which outhit Midwestern .135 to .089, and Boan added to her defensive effort by notching five aces with only one service error in the contest.

Midwestern’s Abbi Meyer, who put up 25 kills against the Zias on Friday, led the Lady Indians with 13 kills, but also made 11 errors.

Eastern finished off its regular season series with MSU with a 2-1 record. In addition to Monday’s victory and Friday’s five-set loss (30-28, 30-27, 25-30, 19-30, 15-13), the Zias swept Midwestern in three games (30-21, 30-26, 30-26) on Sept. 6 in Portales.

ENMU has its first LSC South action of the season on Thursday, when it heads to San Angelo, Texas to take on Angelo State University. The Zias went 7-3 in LSC South play in 2003.

Game time in San Angelo is 6 p.m. MDT. Eastern is on the road until Oct. 14, when it will play host to Texas A&M University-Kingsville at Greyhound Arena.
