Eastern Sweeps Weekend Against Regional Foes
Zias outscore opponents 9-1 in pair of triumphs

ODESSA, TEXAS — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team evened up its record at 4-4-0 with a 6-0 drubbing of the University of Texas at Permian Basin on Saturday, Sept. 18. The win completed a perfect weekend for ENMU, which outscored its opponents by a lopsided 9-1 margin.

Anna Funck (So., M, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) scored two goals and two assists in Saturday’s victory to lead the Zias over UTPB. Megan Dozier (So., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS) tallied the game-winning goal on Saturday to go along with a two-assist outing in a 3-1 victory on Friday against the College of the Southwest.

Dozier got the Zias on the board in the first half against UTPB, taking a pass from Funck and putting it home to give Eastern a lead it would not relinquish. Funck scored the next two goals of the game to put ENMU up 3-0. Her first tally of the afternoon was unassisted, while Nicole Johnson (Sr., M, Las Vegas, NV/Cochise CC) was credited with an assist on her second score.

Nicole Bregler (Fr., M, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) scored her first collegiate goal directly off a corner kick to put Eastern up 4-0, and Lezlie Varner (Fr., F, Hobbs, NM/Hobbs HS) and Johnson finished off the scoring for the Zias. Bregler picked up the assist on Varner’s score, while Funck finished off her six-point game with an assist on Johnson’s tally.

Stephanie Sanchez (Fr., GK, Belen, NM/Belen HS) earned the victory for the Zias, playing the first 60 minutes of the contest, and Amy Holtman (Fr., GK, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian HS) came in for the final 30 to finish off the shutout for ENMU.

On Friday, the Zias got points from five different players in the 3-1 victory over CSW. The two teams entered the half in a scoreless tie, but Eastern had no intention of remaining silent for the remainder of the game. Valeria Noriega (Jr., M, El Paso, TX/Cochise CC) got the Zias on the board, giving the visiting squad a 1-0 lead.

Later in the half, Jessica Rosas (Jr., F, Escondido, CA/Cochise CC) scored her first goal of the season to put Eastern up 2-0, with Dozier picking up an assist on the play. Dozier added another assist later in the contest on Karly Parkans’ (Jr., F, Peoria, AZ/Paradise Valley CC) third goal of the year. Varner also was credited with an assist on the tally, as ENMU took a 3-0 lead late in the game before allowing CSW to crack the scoreboard.

Amanda Vanlandingham (Fr., GK, Hobbs, NM/Hobbs HS) started the game in net for ENMU, but was replaced after 20 minutes by Sanchez, who earned both victories in this weekend’s contests. Sanchez finished the game off for ENMU, giving up only one goal.

The Zias return home for the first time in 2004 next weekend, with a pair of conference foes coming to town. ENMU plays host to Texas Woman’s University on Friday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. and will follow that up with a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 25 against Texas A&M University-Commerce. Both games will be played at the ENMU Soccer Field.
