Zias Fall on the Road to St. Mary's
Sanchez Registers Five Saves in Loss

SAN ANTONIO — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team dropped to 2-3 on the 2004 season, falling on the road to St. Mary’s University, 2-0. Stephanie Sanchez (Fr., GK, Belen, NM/Belen HS) made five saves in net for the Zias.

The Rattlers (2-1-0) got a pair of unassisted, second-half goals to propel them to their second win of the season. Kelly Felts put a shot just inside the far post at the 61:10 mark to put SMU on the board and give the team all the offense it needed in the match. Kyle Hyslop added an insurance goal at 86:57 to ice the game.

“It was like the game against Pueblo in that it was very physical and a very rough game, but it was elevated a little bit more,” Head Coach Travis McCorkle said. “From where we have come from the beginning of the year to where we are now, we’re still building and we’re getting toward where we want to be.”

ENMU was not without its fair share of chances in the latter stages of the game, putting the pressure on the Rattlers in the closing minutes. SMU goalkeeper Bianca Acosta made six saves in the game, five of which came in the second half.

St. Mary’s outshot the Zias 15-10 in the contest, and put seven shots on net to the Zias’ six. Anna Funck led ENMU with three shots, putting all of her scoring attempts on net.

The Zias are on the road again on Sunday when they take on the University of the Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. MDT.
