Hunnicutt is Chosen Second Team All-Region for Second Consecutive Season
Senior forward Averaged 18.4 Points and 8.3 Rebounds per game

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University senior forward Jamaal Hunnicutt (6’5”, 225 lbs., Amarillo, TX/Randall HS/Hill JC) has been named Second Team All South Central Region for the second year in a row, as selected by members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The All-Region Team honored five players on the First Team and five players on the Second Team.

Earlier this year, Hunnicutt was chosen First Team All-Lone Star Conference South Division for the second consecutive season by the LSC South head coaches. He was named Second Team All-LSC South in 2002-03.

“I’m completely thrilled that he received the award,” Head Coach Shawn Scanlan said. “He’s certainly deserving. An argument can be made that he should be on the First Team, but I’m glad that he was selected as an All-Region player again this season.”

This past year, Hunnicutt led the Hounds with 496 points (18.4 avg.) and 225 rebounds (8.3 avg.). He also ranked first on the team in field goal percentage (158 of 292, 54.1%), steals (55, 2.0 avg.) and blocked shots (17, 0.6 avg.). He started every game and scored in double digits in 26 of 27 contests. He recorded a career-high 30 points against West Texas A&M University on Feb. 21, 2005.

In the LSC South, he averaged 22.3 points per game, while scoring at least 17 points in
every game. He scored 20 or more points eighth times in the LSC South and 11 times overall. He also averaged 9.8 rebounds per game against LSC South opponents.

“What do you say about a guy who finishes his career, in his final 12 conference games, averaging 22.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game?,” Scanlan said. “And he did it on a team that was ailing and gave that team a chance to compete.”

Hunnicutt finished his career with 1,311 points over four seasons to rank 11th on the ENMU all-time scoring list, just five points behind Jerry Hyder (1967-71). Hyder played on Eastern’s NAIA National Championship team in 1968-69. Hunnicutt also earned 773 rebounds, 271 assists, 157 steals and 77 blocked shots during his ENMU career. He connected on 53.0% of his career field goals attempts (439 of 828) and made 73.1% of his free throws (433 of 579).

Hunnicutt was first chosen Second Team All-Region by the NABC in 2003-04, when he earned 12.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He helped the Greyhounds qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time since 1992-93.

He was named LSC South Player of the Week four times during his career, including twice this past season. He ranked third in the LSC in scoring in 2004-05 and was second in steals, seventh in minutes played, eighth in rebounding, tied for ninth in field goal percentage and 12th in free throw percentage.

Other career highlights included ranking second in the LSC in rebounding in 2003-04 and recording a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Abilene Christian on Jan. 29, 2004. He recorded 22 double-doubles at ENMU. Off the court, he has qualified for the ENMU Athletic Honor Roll three times: Spring 2003, Fall 2003 and Fall 2004.
