Joey Furlong Signs National Letter-of-Intent with ENMU Men's Cross Country Team

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University head cross country coach Joel McMullen has announced the signing of Menaul High School senior Joey Furlong to a National Letter-of-Intent to run for the Greyhounds next season. Furlong, from Albuquerque, N.M., will be a freshman during the 2005-06 academic year.

McMullen and his assistant coach, Matthew Gordillo, have recruited to rebuild and add depth to both the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the upcoming season, focusing primarily on the tremendous amount of talented runners throughout New Mexico. The ENMU men’s cross country squad finished fifth in the Lone Star Conference and 13th in the NCAA South Central Regional in 2004.

Furlong brings ENMU solid athletic and academic credentials. He was one of the top 11 senior finishers (18th overall) at the 2004 New Mexico Class 2A State Championships. He was being heavily recruited by several in-state and out-of-state universities.

“Joey brings a great personality, work ethic and talent in and out of the classroom. He is going to be an outstanding addition to our program and will help elevate the overall talent level of the team far above where we have been,” McMullen commented. “His decision to sign with Eastern is a tremendous gain for our cross country team. We wanted as many top New Mexico high school runners as possible, and Joey definitely fits the bill.”
