PORTALES, N.M. — Matthew Loewen, a 5’11”, 165-pound defender from Clovis High School in Clovis, N.M., has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team. Loewen will be a freshman at ENMU during the 2005 season.

Loewen’s play for the Clovis High School earned him Second Team All-District recognition as a junior and a senior. He has been named Mr. Hustle and Most Improved Player at CHS, as well as being chosen captain of the boys’ soccer team. He also has played for the High Plains Drifters in club soccer.

Loewen had great success on the track team, as he ranked second in the Region in the mile and the two-mile distances. He participated in the National Honor Society, the FCA and the Spanish Club at CHS.

“Matt is a phenomenal athlete, who will add depth to our defense,” ENMU Head Coach Carlos Elizondo said. “We’re excited to have him join the Greyhounds.” Loewen has excelled academically, maintaining a 4.0 grade-point-average throughout high school. He has been named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students, while attaining Top in Class honors in Advanced Placement courses in calculus and chemistry.

Eastern New Mexico University fielded its first intercollegiate men’s soccer team this past fall. The Greyhounds are members of the highly-competitive Southwest Soccer Conference that included eight talented squads, with four challenging at the national level. ENMU finished its first season with a 6-12-2 overall record, including 3-10-1 in the SSC. The Hounds lost six conference games by one goal.
