Whipkey Hits Homer in Second Inning, Ends Game with RBI Single

PORTALES, N.M. — Freshman first baseman Elizabeth Whipkey (Orange, CA/Villa Park HS) accounted for two of Eastern New Mexico University's runs in a 3-2, eight-inning victory over Texas A&M University-Kingsville, in the opening game of a Lone Star Conference double-header on Friday, Apr. 15. ENMU lost the nightcap, 4-1, and is now 18-27 overall, 3-15 in the LSC South. TAMUK is 28-26 overall, 9-9 in the LSC South.

Whipkey hit her first home run of the year in the second inning of the first game, giving the Zias a 1-0 lead. She also drove in the winning run with a two-out single to shallow left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. She was 3 for 4 at the plate, as her batting average improved to .385. Natasha Lindsey (Jr., RHP, Auburn, WA/Tusculum College) pitched a complete game in the opener to move to 6-6 on the season.

In the nightcap, Jessica Nocas (Jr., SS, Riverside, CA/Midland College) accounted for the sole Zia run, knocking in Tori Picazo (So, LF, McKinney, TX/Western Texas College) with a triple in the sixth inning. Rosemary Moreno (Jr., RHP, Midland, TX/Midland College) pitched the complete-game loss, giving up four runs and 10 hits, while striking out six Javelinas.
