PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University head cross country coach Joel McMullen has announced the signing of Michaelann Cavazos, a senior at West Las Vegas High School, to a National Letter-of-Intent to run for the Zias next season. Cavazos, from Las Vegas, N.M., will be a freshman during the 2005-06 academic year. She is the daughter of Chris and Isabelle Cavazos. McMullen and his assistant coach, Matthew Gordillo, have recruited to rebuild and add depth to both the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the upcoming season, focusing primarily on the tremendous amount of talented runners throughout New Mexico. The Zia cross country squad finished ninth in the Lone Star Conference in 2004. “We feel lucky to have been able to sign Michaelann,” McMullen said. “She flew under the recruiting radar in cross country due to some health issues that have been resolved. She has been one of West Las Vegas High’s very best runners during her high school career. We believe she will add depth and experience to the Zias next fall. “We are thankful to Coach Armijo at West Las Vegas High School as well as signee Gillie Lopez and his family for the “heads up” on Michaelann,” McMullen added. “She is a fantastic young lady, and we are looking forward to her contributions here at Eastern New Mexico University.” Michaelann Cavazos |
