Holman Forces Extra Session with Goal at 88:28

Box Score

DENVER, COLO. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit to force overtime, but Shaun Elbaum scored his third goal of the game for Metropolitan State College just 33 seconds into the extra period to send the Greyhounds to a 3-2 defeat on Sunday, Aug. 28. The Greyhounds fell to 0-2 on the season, while Metro State upped its record to 2-0.

The Roadrunners scored just 7:12 into the contest, when Elbaum hit the netting with a follow-up shot. Elbaum increased the Metro State advantage to 2-0 at 34:59 with his second goal of the game. ENMU cut the lead to 2-1 at halftime, following a goal by Jared Morris (Fr., M, Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS). Morris’ goal, which came just 2:41 after Elbaum’s second score, was assisted by Bryan Jonas (So., D, New Braunfels, TX/Canyon HS) and Rob Humphrey (So., F/M, Moriarty, NM/Fort Lewis College).

Almost all of the second half went by without another goal. Jonathan Holman (So., F, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) from ENMU ended the cold spell just in time to keep the Hounds alive. His header goal at 88:28 was assisted on a cross from Rhen Salas (Fr., M, San Antonio, TX/ Judson HS).

Elbaum redirected a shot a 90:33 to provide a quick ending to the overtime period. Phillip Owen and Antonio Porras were credited with assists on the play.

Metro State achieved a 28-11 margin in total shots, including a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. ENMU goalie Leif Craddock (So., Amarillo, TX/West Texas A&M University) registered 10 saves, including nine in the first half. David McReavy earned three saves for Metro State.

ENMU will look to rebound from the sudden defeat when the Greyhounds open a five game homestand on Friday, Sept. 2 against Colorado Christian University. Game time at the ENMU Soccer Field is set for 4 p.m. MST. The homestand will continue with matches against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sept. 4, West Texas A&M University on Sept. 6, University of the Incarnate Word on Sept. 9 and St. Mary’s University on Sept. 11.
