ENMU Volleyball Team Drops Season Opener to Wayland Baptist, 3-1
Schiely Leads Zias with 16 kills and 4 total blocks

PLAINVIEW, TEXAS — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team opened the 2005 season on Aug. 30 with a 3-1 loss at Wayland Baptist University. The Zias won the first game, 30-23, but the Pioneers claimed the final three games, 30-24, 31-29 and 30-17. The match also was the season opener for WBU.

Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clachamas CC) led the Eastern attack, finishing the match with 16 kills, a .316 hitting percentage and four total blocks. Grace George (Jr., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) provided 10 kills and three block assists. She also earned a team-leading .381 hitting percentage.

Kristi Britain (Sr., OH, Fort Sumner, NM/Fort Sumner HS) was solid defensively with three total blocks while achieving six kills. Freshman Rhea Wortman (OH, Prineville, OR/Crook County HS) had a good performance in her first match at the collegiate level, attaining six kills and one of the Zias’ three solo blocks.

Although ENMU had more kills than WBU (47-44), the Zias commited 18 service errors, which were instrumental in the loss. Wayland Baptist managed 15 total team blocks, while Eastern totaled nine team blocks.

ENMU will play its home opener at Greyhound Arena on Friday, Sept. 2, against in-state rival New Mexico Highlands University. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST. The Zias will be on the road at Lubbock Christian University on Tuesday, Sept. 6, before heading off to Austin, Texas, for the Lone Star Conference/Heartland Conference Crossover Tournament on Sept. 9-10.
