ENMU Earns 2-1 Overtime Win against Mesa State
Dozier Scores Deciding Goal

Box Score

DURANGO, COLO. — Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS) gave the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team its first victory of the 2005 season with an overtime goal for a 2-1 victory over Mesa State College, Saturday, Aug. 27, at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. The Zias evened their record at 1-1 overall, while the Mavericks lost their season opener.

ENMU had to come from behind for the victory after going down 1-0 less than a minute into the second half on a goal by Marisa Hart. Jennifer Goodrum (Sr., M, Ogden, UT/Weber State Univ.) knotted the match at 1-1 after taking a 15-yard crossing pass from Dozier with 62:42 elapsed on the clock. Neither team scored during the rest of regulation and the game moved into the first 10-minute overtime.

At the 98:35 mark, Dozier took a pass from Katharine Coulombe (So., D, Sammamish, WA/Eastlake HS) and hit a 25-yard chip shot that sailed over the Mavericks’ goalkeeper for the victory. It was Dozier’s second career overtime goal. She also scored the deciding goal in a 2-1 overtime win over Texas Woman’s University on Oct. 3, 2003, during Eastern’s inaugural season.

Amy Holtman (So., GK, Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian School) was solid in the goal for the Zias, as she kept the Mavericks scoreless in the first half with five saves. Stephanie Sanchez (So., GK, Belen, NM/Belen HS) defended the goal in the second half and in overtime, giving up one goal while recording six saves.

Dozier provided a strong performance on offense, as she took 10 shots and earned an assist to go with her game-winning goal. Goodrum took five shots and claimed the early team scoring lead with her second goal of the season. Kara Henderson (So., D, Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) was credited with three shots, two on goal.

Eastern opens its home schedule with four consecutive games at the ENMU Soccer Field, beginning on Friday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. MST against Colorado Christian University. The Zias will wrap up their first weekend at home with a match against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 12 p.m. MST. The homestand concludes with games against the University of the Incarnate Word on Friday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. MST and against St. Mary’s University on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. MST.
