Schiely is Named to 2005 LSC South All-Academic Team

PORTALES, N.M. Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas Community College) was rewarded for her academic and athletic achievements by being selected to the 2005 Lone Star Conference South Division All-Academic Team. Kristi Britain (Sr., OH, Fort Sumner, NM/Fort Sumner HS) and Kristen Van Wettering (Jr., OH, Portales, NM/Portales HS) each qualified for the LSC South Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the second time.

The LSC sports information directors chose the players for the All-Academic Team based upon their accomplishments in academics and athletics. In order to be considered, each player had to maintain a 3.20 grade point average while completing at least 24 semester hours at their current institution and reaching sophomore athletic status. All qualifying student-athletes who were not chosen for the All-Academic Team were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Schiely, a Health and Physical Education major, has maintained a 4.0 GPA since arriving at Eastern in 2004. As a first-year student in 2004, Schiely did not been at ENMU long enough to meet the 24-hour requirement to qualify for the All-Academic Team. In 2004, she was selected First Team All-LSC South and was named Honorable Mention All-Southwest Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

During the 2005 season, Schiely was again named First Team All-LSC South. She had a nearly perfect match on Oct. 8 at Angelo State, as she recorded a career-high 29 kills without any errors on 46 attacks. After finishing sixth in the conference in hitting percentage in 2004 at .290, Schiely improved in her senior year to finish second in the LSC with a team-leading .333 hitting percentage. She was second on the team and eighth in the LSC with 105 blocks. She played in all 27 matches and all 105 games.

Britain was selected to the South Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the second time in her career at Eastern. Her first selection was in 2002. She has earned a 3.47 GPA.

After missing most of the 2003 and 2004 seasons, Britain was chosen again this year, while pursuing her major in Elementary Education. She recorded a season-high 18 kills against Cameron University on Sept. 17 and earned 21 digs in a 3-2 win over Lubbock Christian University on Oct. 4. Her season-high of four blocks was achieved in four different matches. She registered 242 digs (2.85 avg.) and 51 blocks (0.60 avg.) during the season. She played in 85 games.

Like Britain, Van Wettering made the LSC South Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the second time. She also attained the honor last season. She has a 3.86 GPA.

Van Wettering is a Health and Physical Education major at Eastern. She recorded double digits in kills twice this season, first with 10 kills against Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Oct. 15. Two weeks later she was credited with a season-high 11 kills against Tarleton State University. Van Wettering earned 71 digs in 28 games played.

The Zias finished the 2005 season with an overall record of 8-19, including 3-7 in the LSC South. It was Eastern’s first losing season following 16 consecutive winning years. ENMU ranked second in the LSC (13 teams) in blocks with 2.49 team total blocks per game (261.5 in 105 games).
