Zias Hit just 19% of Field Goals in 76-44 Loss at WTAMU

CANYON, TEXAS — In the opening game of the Lone Star Conference South Division
schedule for both teams, West Texas A&M University easily defeated the Eastern New Mexico University, 76-44, on Friday, Dec. 30 at the First United Bank Center. The Zias dropped to 6-5 overall, 0-1 in the LSC South. The Lady Buffs, ranked 15th in NCAA Division II, improved to 9-1 on the season, 1-0 in conference play.

Eastern took its only lead of the game, 4-3, when freshman guard Laura Vote (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood HS) converted a couple of free throws with 17:53 to play in the opening half. A jumper by Tiana Bryant (Sr., Post, Roswell, NM/University of New Mexico) with 14:01 left on the clock tied the game at nine, before the Lady Buffs closed out the first half on a 30-13 run for a commanding 39-22 lead at the break. Eastern scored more points from the charity stripe (12) than from the field in the first half, as the Zias sank just 5 of 30 field goals (16.7%), including 0-6 from beyond the three-point arc.

West Texas scored six points at the start of the second half for a 45-22 advantage, before Lindsey Wood (Fr., G, Muleshoe, TX/Muleshoe HS) hit a jumper for the Zias’ first points of the stanza. Wood scored six of the Zias’ first seven points of the second half, with her final bucket at the 15:59 mark bringing Eastern within 17 points, 46-29.

WTAMU eventually increased the lead to as many as 34 points toward the end of the game. Heather Brown (Jr., G, Hereford, TX/ Hereford HS) provided Eastern’s only three-pointer of the contest with just over four minutes left to play.

The Zias shot slightly better from the field in the second half at 21.7% (7-33) and finished the game with finishing the game with 19.0% shooting from the field (12 of 63). After hitting almost 86% of their free throw attempts in the first half (12 of 14), the Zias managed only 50% accuracy at the line (7 of 14) during the final 20 minutes. ENMU connected on just one of 17 three-point attempts during the game.

West Texas had four players in double figures, led by Keisha Monroe’s 21 points. Alicia Saunders finished with a double-double, with 10 points and 12 boards. The Lady Buffs were a force defensively, as they blocked 10 shots in the game, led by Monroe and Saunders, who each managed three blocks.

Eastern was led in scoring by Bryant, who finished with 11 points. She also recorded nine rebounds and five steals. Erika Cook (So., G, Portales, NM/Portales HS) scored seven points and was 5 of 6 at the free throw line. Vote, who went 4 for 4 from the charity stripe, scored six points. Wood, the only Zia to hit 50% of her shots (3 of 6), also contributed six points.

ENMU will begin 2006 with two LSC crossover games in Oklahoma. The first game will be played at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 5 p.m. MST. The Zias will visit the University of Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. MST, before returning to Greyhound Arena after five consecutive games on the road.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, Eastern will host East Central University in an LSC crossover game at 5:30 p.m. MST. The Zias will finish the two-game homestand against Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. MST.
