Bregler Named to the 2005 LSC South All-Academic Team
PORTALES, N.M. — Sophomore midfielder Nicole Bregler (Alamogordo, NM/
Alamogordo HS) became the second Zia to receive Lone Star Conference All-Academic honors
in the program’s three-year history, as she earned a spot on the 2005 LSC South All-Academic
Team. Five of her teammates were named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, including
senior forward Karly Parkans (Peoria, AZ/Paradise Valley CC), junior defender Pamela Campbell (Sierra Vista, AZ/Cochise College), sophomore defender Katharine Coulombe (Sammamish,
WA/Eastlake HS), sophomore forward Kara Henderson (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS)
and sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez (Belen, NM/Belen HS).
The LSC sports information directors chose the players for the All-Academic Team based
upon their accomplishments in academics and athletics. In order to be considered, each player had
to maintain a 3.20 grade point average while completing at least 24 semester hours at their current
institution and reaching sophomore athletic status. All qualifying student-athletes who were not
chosen for the All-Academic Team were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
LSC All-Academic Team
Bregler, a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry, has been on the ENMU Athletic Honor
Roll in each semester since her freshman year and has achieved a 3.85 GPA. Bregler finished her
second season at Eastern with four goals and two assists this season. The ten points ranked her fourth
on the team in overall scoring, .541 shot on goal percentage was the second best among Zia goal scorers.
Three of Bregler’s goals came in ENMU victories against the University of the Incarnate Word,
the University of Texas-Permian Basin and the College of the Southwest. The latter two wins were
back-to-back 3-0 shutouts on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2. During her freshman season, Bregler recorded nine
points on two goals and five assists to tie for fourth on the team. Her assist total was second best on
the ENMU squad.
LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll
Parkans is a Psychology major with a 3.2 GPA, who has played two solid seasons for the Zias,
after transferring from Paradise Valley CC prior to her junior year. In limited playing action this fall,
Parkans was credited with two assists. Last year, she came off the bench to record six goals. She ended
the 2004 season with 12 points to rank second on the team.
Two years ago, during Eastern’s inaugural season (2003), Campbell was the first Zia selected
to the LSC All-Academic Team. She was named Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District 6 this fall. In three seasons at Eastern, she has played in 51 games with 49 starts.
Campbell is majoring in Biology with an emphasis in Zoology and has achieved a 3.63 GPA.
In two seasons with the Zias, Coulombe has provided solid defense while starting in 32 of 33
games played. She scored her only career goal on a penalty kick in the final game of the 2005 campaign,
a 2-1 loss to Texas Woman’s University. Coulombe has not decided on a major at ENMU. She has
recorded a 3.80 GPA.
It was Henderson’s second selection to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She also was
named to the Honor Roll during the 2004 season. She has accumulated a 3.22 GPA while majoring in
Business Administration. Henderson moved from defender to forward this year and recorded 11 points
on five goals and one assist. She finished third in scoring for the Zias and provided game-winning goals
against Colorado Christian University and St. Gregory’s University.
Sanchez has started in goal for the Zias in 24 games and has seen action in an additional eight
games in her two-year career at Eastern. She is undecided regarding her major and has attained a
3.59 GPA. In 2005, she finished the year with a 7-8-1 win-loss record and a 1.55 goals against average.
Sanchez improved her play in her second season by giving up almost half a goal less per game, while
increasing her save percentage to .810.
Eastern fell one victory short of advancing to the LSC Tournament for the first time in school
history. Even so, the Zias’ achieved their first-ever winning record at 10-8-1 overall. Although the Zias
took 43 fewer shots, they scored four more goals and had 10 more points than their opponents. During
the three seasons in the program’s existence, the Zias have improved every year, attaining a 3-12 record
in 2003 and a 9-9-2 record in 2004.
