of Double-Header against Colorado Mines

Box Score - Game 1 - CSM 9, ENMU 0
Box Score - Game 2 - ENMU 18, CSM 2

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University pounded out 17 hits, including a two run homer by freshman center fielder Derrick Kennedy (San Antonio, TX/Brackenridge HS), as the Greyhounds routed the Colorado School of Mines, 18-2, in the second game of a double-header, Feb. 13 at Greyhound Field. Colorado Mines won the first game, 9-0, as Kevin Barrett threw a complete-game five-hitter for the Orediggers.

Sunday’s action was originally scheduled as a single nine-inning contest, but was changed to a double-header after both of Saturday’s games were rained out. ENMU moved to 3-1 on the season after splitting the double-header, while Colorado Mines went to 4-2.

Eastern’s Mark Wallace (Sr., 1B, Alamogordo, NM/Alamogordo HS) led all players for both teams with five hits in six at bats. He was the only Greyhound with more than one hit in the first game (2 for 3), then went 3 for 3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs in the second game.

Justin Gee (Jr., RF, Clovis, NM/Clovis HS) drove in five runs and scored twice for ENMU in the second game, while going 3 for 4 at the plate. Mike Deal led CSM in the opener, as he went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer to center field.

Senior pitcher Trevor Davis (Evergreen, CO/Evergreen HS), struck out six batters and did not give up a walk in six innings. He allowed five hits and two runs, but one run was unearned and the other was aided by a fly ball lost in the sun. Davis improved to 2-0 with the win. Kellen Smith (Fr., RHP, Amarillo, TX/Randall HS) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

The first game was scoreless through three innings before Colorado Mines scored four times in the fourth. The Orediggers strung together four singles with one out to score runs by Deal and Stephen Krier. Tommy Harris recorded the third run on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Roth. With two outs, Matt Owens struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Caleb Rudkin received a base on balls, then Mike Ott walked to bring in Will Dickinson with the fourth run.

Neither team scored in the next two and a half innings, but CSM tacked on five runs in the seventh. Ryan Oliver singled to start the stanza, then Deal blasted his two-run homer. Owens later drove in two runs with a double, then scored on a single by Rudkin.

Deal’s 3-for-4 performance was matched by Rudkin. Harris went 2 for 4 and scored twice for the Orediggers. Wallace’s two hits for ENMU were followed Bryan Moore (Sr., 2B, Wolfforth, TX/ Howard College), Ryan French (Jr., CF, Carlsbad, NM/Trinidad JC) and Gilbert Alvarado (Jr., LF, Roswell, NM/New Mexico State University) with one hit apiece. French also made a diving catch in center field to end the third inning with a runner on second.

Barrett, 1-1 on the season, struck out two batters and allowed two walks, as he recorded the win. All five ENMU hits were singles.

The Greyhounds scored three runs in the first inning of the second game. Moore singled to open the game, then scored two batters later on a ground out by Brett Scherer (Sr., 3B, Ingram, TX/Midland College). Micah Bernhardt (Jr., 2B/SS, Gypsum, CO/Arapahoe CC), who singled after Moore, moved to second on Scherer’s grounder and advanced to third on a passed ball. Wallace doubled to right center to score Bernhardt, then crossed the plate himself on a single by Gee.

Eastern plated three more runs in the third stanza. Bernhardt, the first batter in the inning, reached first base on an error by Rudkin at shortstop. Scherer walked, then Wallace drove in Bernhardt and sent Scherer to third with a single to center. After Wallace stole second base, Gee hit a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield.

The Orediggers tallied two runs in the fourth inning. John Naccarato drove in one run with a double, then scored the second run when Joel D’Cristina reached base on an error with two outs.

ENMU stopped the comeback by scoring six times in the bottom of the inning. Alvarado singled before scoring on a double by Moore. Moore reached third on a balk, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bernhardt. Scherer and Wallace singled, and Gee was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mike McDuffie (So., 3B, Albuquerque, NM/Sandia HS) walked to bring home Scherer.

After Kennedy hit into a fielder’s choice, Tyler Brown (Jr., C, Aurora, CO/Arapahoe CC) cleared all three bases with a double down the right field line. Eastern led 12-2.

Davis retired CSM in order in the top of the fifth, then the Greyhounds scored five more runs. Gee hit a two-run double during the stanza, while McDuffie drove in one run on a ground out. Kennedy provided the final two runs with his homer to left field. It was his second home run of the season. Gee scored on the play.

The game’s final run was recorded by Alvarado, who led off the sixth with a single to center. He reached second when Davis, in his first collegiate at bat in four seasons at ENMU, singled through the right side. Jose Meza (Jr., 1B, Gypsum, CO/Arapahoe CC) hit a single down the right field line to score Alvarado from second.

Wallace and Gee recorded three hits, and the Hounds received two hits each from Bernhardt (2 of 4), Alvarado (2 of 4) and Moore (2 of 5). Nine players scored, led by Bernhardt and Scherer with three runs apiece. Wallace and Gee scored twice, as did Moore, Kennedy and Alvarado.

CSM was held to five hits, one each by five players. Naccarato’s double, and a triple to center by Tully Gallagher, were the Orediggers’ only extra-base hits. Gallagher tripled with one out in the sixth inning. CSM failed to score, as a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.

The Greyhounds play at home again on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20 in a pair of double-headers against the University of Central Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MST each day. The games will be LSC crossover games, which do not count in the divisional standings.
