HOBBS, N.M. — Junior pitcher Amanda Nightingale (RHP, Mesquite, TX/North Central Texas College) threw a complete-game five hitter and junior pitcher Patricia Gonzales (RHP, Los Angeles, CA/Western Texas College) threw a run-rule shortened one-hitter, as the Eastern New Mexico University Zias defeated College of the Southwest, 8-1 and 10-0, in a double-header on Feb. 16. Eastern improved to 3-4 with the sweep. College of the Southwest, in its first season of intercollegiate softball, started the season at 0-2.

Nightingale gave up five singles, while recording five strikeouts in the opener. In the second game, Gonzales allowed just three runners — on a single, a hit batsman and an error. She also registered six strikeouts.

In the first game, Tina Whitt (Jr., C/DP, Riverside, CA/Midland College) recorded three hits, while hitting a double and driving in two runs. Adriana Reyes (Jr., 3B/SS, El Paso, TX/El Paso CC) went 2 for 3 in the opener, with two doubles and two RBIs. Jessica Nocas (Jr., SS, Riverside, CA/Midland College) added two hits in four at bats, then went 3 for 4 with two doubles in the second game.

Adina Taul (Jr., CF, Placentia, CA/Midland College) tripled in both contests and was 2 for 4 in the nightcap. Christina Helland (Fr., 3B/LF, Albuquerque, NM/Rio Rancho HS) pounded out a triple in the first game, and was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs in the second game. Danielle Flores (So., LF, Loving, NM/Loving HS) was 4 for 5 in the second contest. Overall, the Zias registered 13 hits in the opener, before earning 19 hits in the run-rule game.

ENMU scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away in the first game. CSW scored its only run of the day in the Lady Mustangs’ first at bat, but Eastern tallied one run each in the second and third stanzas for a 2-1 lead. In the second game, the ENMU offense erupted for seven runs in the third inning, then tacked on three runs in the sixth.

The Zias return to Portales to open an eight-game homestand on Friday, Feb. 18 against New Mexico Highlands University. Game time for the first game of the double header is scheduled for 12 p.m. MST.

Eastern also will be at home on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20 against Western New Mexico University, and on Wednesday, Feb. 23 versus Adams State College. The double-headers will start at 12 p.m. MST both days against WNMU and at 11 a.m. MST against Adams State.
