Heather Brown Chosen LSC South Player of the Week

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University sophomore guard Heather Brown (Hereford, TX/Hereford HS) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19. Brown led the Zias in scoring and field goal percentage, as ENMU defeated Texas A&M University Commerce, 71-67, on Feb. 17, and won at Midwestern State University, 80-73, on Feb. 19.

For the week, Brown averaged 20.5 points per game, while shooting an impressive 60.0% from the field on 15 of 25 shooting. She also was productive from 3-point range, where she connected on 9 of 19 attempts (47.4%). Brown dished out five assists, and added a two blocks and one steal, as she led the Zias to the pair of road victories. ENMU improved to 11-14 on the season, including 5-7 in the LSC South.

In the contest at TAMU-Commerce, Brown scored 16 points and hit four 3-point shots. Her biggest impact on the game was with 45 seconds left, when she grabbed a key defensive rebound while Commerce was within three points of the Zias. Brown was effective at both ends of the court, as she provided three assists and blocked two shots.

Brown experienced even more success at Midwestern State, where she tied her career high by scoring 25 points. Her previous 25-point game was last season on Feb. 5, 2004, in a 76-72 win at Midwestern State. In Saturday’s game, she shot 75.0% from the field (9 of 12) to tie her season best. She also made 5 of 8 three-pointers for the Zias, while adding four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

For the season, Brown is averaging a team-leading 11.7 points per game. She also leads the Zias in assists (78), steals (44), three-point baskets (48), three-point percentage (42.1%) and minutes played (821, 32.8 avg.).

The Zias have two games remaining, both at Greyhound Arena, starting on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m MST against Texas Woman’s University. On Saturday, Feb. 26, Eastern will host Texas Woman’s University at 5 p.m. MST.
