PORTALES, N.M. — While the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M University could not miss, Eastern New Mexico University had difficulty at both sides of the court in a lopsided 91-44 Lone Star Conference South Division game, Jan. 24 at the WTAMU Event Center. WTAMU took the lead for good eight seconds into the game on a 3-pointer by Sunni Jo Petty. The Zias’ first basket did not come until the 15:30 mark with a jumper by Mika Robertson (Sr., F, Levelland, TX/Midland College). The Lady Buffs improved to 12-5, 3-1 in the LSC South while Eastern fell to 7-10, 1-3 in the LSC South.

All twelve WTAMU players who suited up for the game scored, led by Dixie Bell with 17 points, including 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Vasha Adams added 16 points (7-11) and had a game high 7 rebounds for West Texas, which outrebounded Eastern 45-38. The Lady Buffs shot an impressive 48% (12-25) from behind the arc, while the Zias were able to connect on only 27.8% (5-18) of their 3-point attempts.

Heather Brown (So., G, Hereford, TX/Hereford HS) was the only Zia in double figures, scoring 13 points with three 3-pointers. Robertson added eight points and Tia Doss (Jr., F, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) scored six points to go along with four assists.

ENMU went into the break already down 50-19 and shooting only 26.7% (8-30) from the field, while West Texas shot a sizzling 58.8% (20-34) in the first half. The Zias did not hit double digits until a Brown layup with 4:22 remaining in the half .

The halftime rest did not help the Zias, as West Texas went on a 14-3 run in the first 8:25 of the second half putting the game completely out of reach, taking a 42-point lead, 64-22. Ashley Davidson (Jr., G, Carrollton, TX/Odessa College) and Robertson led Eastern with six rebounds apiece. Brown blocked three shots and Riikka Lehtonen (Jr., Post, Turku, Finland/Kilgore College) had two blocks of her own.

The Zias will stay on the road for the next two games, taking on Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. MST, followed by a game against Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. MST.
