Gabe DeHoyosFormer ENMU Pitcher Gabe DeHoyos Moves up to Triple A in Royals' Organization

PORTALES, N.M. — Right-handed pitcher Gabe DeHoyos (6’0”, 225 lbs., Artesia, NM/Artesia HS), who threw for Eastern New Mexico University for three seasons from 2000 to 2002, has been called up from the Burlington Bees (A) to the Omaha Royals (AAA) within the Kansas City Royals’ organization. DeHoyos, who was a starter at Eastern and has been a relief pitcher at the professional level, joined the Omaha Royals on May 28.

DeHoyos was 2-0 with a 1.52 earned run average, 35 strikeouts and two saves in 29 2/3
innings pitched at Burlington this season. He saw action in 10 games, including one start. He allowed just 21 hits and five earned runs.

Last season, DeHoyos was 1-2 with a 2.28 ERA and five saves in 16 relief appearances in Burlington. He closed out the year with the Bees after the Kansas City Royals obtained him from the Schaumburg Flyers of the independent Northern League.

DeHoyos played in Schaumburg in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He earned a 4-0 record with a 2.44 ERA and three saves in 2003, then went 3-2 with a 2.51 ERA and nine saves in 2004. He was named to the Northern League South Division All-Star Team in 2004 before being obtained by the Royals’ organization.

In his first week with the Omaha Royals, DeHoyos threw twice. During his first appearance at the Triple A level on May 28, he allowed five runs (four earned) in 1/3 of an inning against the Albuquerque Isotopes. In his second trip to the mound, against the New Orleans Zephyrs on June 2, he threw two innings and allowed two runs (both earned).

DeHoyos concluded his three years at ENMU with a stellar 3.86 career ERA and an overall record of 16-10. He achieved 204 strikeouts in 193 1/3 innings for an average of 9.50 strikeouts per nine innings. He tied the ENMU single season record with 83 strikeouts in 2001, when he led the Lone Star Conference with 11.04 strikeouts per nine innings.
