Three Greyhounds Named to the 2005 Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s track and field team
has placed three athletes on the 2005 Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team. The Greyhounds also were represented by one member on the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, while the ENMU women’s track and field team placed five athletes on the Honor Roll.

Cole Perrin (Jr., 200m/400m, Dexter, NM/Dexter HS), Branden Sultemeier (So., Thrower,
Fredericksburg, TX/Fredericksburg HS), and Ty Touchstone (Sr., 200m/400m, Lubbock, TX/Monterey HS) were selected to the All-Academic Team by the LSC sports information directors on the basis of academic and athletic achievement. In order to be eligible for LSC academic honors a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 grade point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours at the nominating institution.

All qualifying student-athletes not chosen for the All-Academic team were named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The Greyhound who qualified for the Honor Roll was Diego Espinoza (Jr., Sprinter, Moriarty, NM/Moriarty HS).

The Zias had five qualifiers for the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. They were Jennifer Cotter (So., Thrower, Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado HS), DeAnn Luce (So., Thrower, Fort Sumner, NM/Fort Sumner HS), Joanna Munoz (So., 400m, Dexter, NM/Dexter HS), Stephanie Prather (Jr., Javelin, Hagerman, NM/Hagerman HS), and Nicole Valdez (Sr., Thrower, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo Christian School).

Perrin ran the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash for the Greyhounds in 2004, in addition to participating on the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 relay teams. In the 200-meter dash, his best time was 23.56, while his top time in the 400-meter dash was 52.48. Perrin is majoring in Political Science at Eastern and has accumulated a 3.87 GPA.

Sultemeier competed in the shot put and the discus. He earned a ninth place finish in the shot put at the LSC Championships with a throw of 44’4 1/4”. His discus throw of 111’3” placed him 14th at the LSC meet. Sultemeier has achieved a 3.29 GPA while majoring in History.

Touchstone is a two sport student-athlete at Eastern with an impressive academic career. In track & field, he ran the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, and was a member of the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 relay teams. In the 200-meter dash, his top time was 23.44 in a meet at Angelo State University. He was 23rd in the 200-meter dash at the LSC Championships, as he clocked in at 23.59. He placed 22nd in the 400-meter dash at the LSC meet with his top time of 54.35.

He was selected ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-America in 2003 and 2004 as a free safety on the ENMU football team. He was named Second Team Academic All-America in football in 2002, and received Academic All-District honors in football in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Last fall, he was named College Division Football Academic All-America of the Year .

Touchstone was named to the LSC South All-Academic Team in football in 2002, 2003, and 2004. He maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA through the Fall 2004 semester. He is majoring in Business Administration and Computer Information Systems.

Espinoza, a sprinter, is majoring in Physical Education and has achieved a 3.41 GPA. His top time in the 100-meter dash was 11.75 at the LSC Championships, where he placed 17th.

For the Zias, Cotter competed in the hammer and the discus this spring. She earned her top distances of the year at the LSC Championships with a throw of 104’7” in the hammer and a throw of 76’4” in the discus. She is majoring in Psychology and Religion with a 3.65 GPA. Luce had a top distance of 99’10” in the javelin and a top throw of 103’3” in the discus. She has earned a 3.52 GPA while majoring in History.

Munoz ran the 400-meter dash for the Zias. Her best time in the 400 was 1:02.46. She is a Biology major with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Prather threw the javelin and is majoring in Biology (Pre-Medicine), recording a 3.24 GPA. Her top throw went 89’6” at the Tarleton State University Relays.

Valdez placed ninth in the shot put at the LSC Championships with a throw of 35’3 1/4”. Her longest throw of the year was 35’11 1/4” at Tarleton State. Valdez is majoring in Chemistry and owns a 3.55 GPA.
