PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University sophomore guard Heather Brown (5’7”, Hereford, TX/Hereford HS) has been named First Team All-Lone Star Conference South Division for the 2004-05 season, in voting by the LSC South head coaches. Brown also was selected as the LSC South Defensive Player of the Year.

Last season, Brown was chosen Honorable Mention All-LSC South and was the LSC South Freshman of the Year. This year, she was the only sophomore chosen First Team All-LSC South, as the four other First Team selections were seniors. An additional five players were named to the Second Team, while 11 players received Honorable Mention, including Tiana Bryant (Jr., Post, 6’0”, Roswell, NM/University of New Mexico) and Tia Doss (Jr., F, 5’11”, Albuquerque, NM/ Highland HS) from ENMU.

Brown led the Zias this season with 11.6 points per game (314 points in 27 games). She also ranked first on the team with 85 assists (3.1 avg.), 53 three-pointers (2.0 avg.), 42.4% three-point shooting, 46 steals (1.7 avg.) and 32.7 minutes played per game. She started all but one game, giving up her spot on the floor in the final game of the season so senior guard Laci Lee (5’10”, Portales, NM/Portales HS) could make a ceremonial start while recovering from an ankle injury.

Brown scored in double figures 16 times during the season, including 11 times in 14 LSC South games. She tied her career high with 25 points at Midwestern State University in an 80-73 win on Feb. 19, 2005. She ranked third in the LSC in three-point field goal percentage and was fifth in three-pointers made per game. Brown also tied for 10th in the LSC in assists, was 11th in minutes played, 12th in assist-to-turnover ratio, 14th in steals and 19th in scoring.

In two seasons at ENMU, she has scored 596 points to go with 83 three-point baskets, 189 rebounds, 165 assists and 83 steals. She needs 63 points to reach the Top 25 on Eastern’s all-time scoring list. She has been chosen LSC South Player of the Week two times, on Feb. 9, 2004 and on Feb. 20, 2005.

Bryant averaged 10.5 points per game this season to trail only Brown on the ENMU scoring chart. She also ranked second on the squad with 5.1 rebounds per game and 18 blocked shots (0.7 avg.). She shot 43.0% from the field (117 of 272) and 70.2% at the free throw line (40 of 57). She scored a career-high 19 points at Midwestern State on Feb. 19, 2005 and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the season finale against Texas A&M University-Kingsville at Greyhound Arena on Feb. 26, 2005.

Since transferring to ENMU midway through last season, Brown has scored 396 points (8.4 avg.), while earning 217 rebounds (4.6 avg.). She also has recorded 57 steals in 47 games played.

Doss contributed 9.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game to the Zias’ efforts in 2004-05. She ranked first on the team and fifth in the LSC in field goal percentage, as she connected on 52.4% of her shots (99 of 189). She produced a career-high 24 points in Eastern’s 77-67 win at TAMU- Kingsville on Jan. 29, 2005.

During her Eastern career, Doss has scored 676 points and currently ranks 24th on the Zias’ all-time scoring list. She also has achieved a career field goal percentage of 47.6%, while earning 320 rebounds, 59 steals and 26 blocked shots.

Doss will complete her undergraduate degree in Psychology this spring. She has the chance to appeal to the NCAA for an additional season of eligibility due to two season ending injuries during her ENMU career. She received a medical redshirt in 2000-01 after suffering a leg injury, and later missed the entire 2003-04 season with an injury to her other leg.

Joining Brown on the First Team All-LSC South list were junior forward Celeste Stevenson of West Texas A&M University, senior center Natalja Tsurbakova of LSC South champion Angelo State University, senior guard Hazel Woods from Texas A&M University-Commerce and senior forward Stephanie Riles of Abilene Christian University. Stevenson was chosen LSC South Player of the year. Katedria Mosley of TAMU-Commerce was named Freshman of the Year and Christy Johnson of Angelo State was named Newcomer of the Year. Sally Brooks of ASU was voted LSC South Coach of the Year.

The Zias ended the 2004-05 season with a four-game winning streak to conclude the year with an overall record of 13-14, including 7-7 in the LSC South. ENMU played the final 18 games of the season without Lee, who was a Second Team All-LSC South selection in 2003-04.

Eastern tied TAMU-Commerce for fourth place in the division, but ENMU did not qualify for the LSC Tournament, as the Lions won the tie-breaker. Eastern and Commerce split their head-to-head meetings, but Commerce went 1-1 against West Texas A&M, while the Zias were 0-2 against the Lady Buffs.
