Davis, Moore, Scherer are Selected First Team All-LSC South

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University senior right-handed pitcher Trevor Davis (Evergreen, CO/Evergreen HS), senior second baseman Bryan Moore (Wolfforth, TX/Frenship HS) and senior third baseman and right-handed pitcher Brett Scherer (Ingram, TX/Midland College) have been named First Team All-LSC South for the 2005 season in voting by the LSC South head coaches. Senior shortstop Josh Kuchta (Clovis, NM/Clovis HS) was chosen Second Team All-LSC South, while senior first baseman Mark Wallace (Alamogordo, NM/ Alamogordo HS) received Honorable Mention All-LSC South recognition.

Bryan MooreMoore was named LSC South Co-Player of the Year, as he shared the honor with senior catcher Steve Yaden from Texas A&M University. Moore led the Greyhounds with a .413 batting average, 76 hits, 52 runs and 16 doubles. He ranked second on the team with 36 RBIs, and was the only ENMU player to start all 53 games. Yaden topped the TAMU-Kingsville roster with a .433 batting average to go with 29 runs and 34 RBIs.

Trevor DavisDavis was chosen LSC South Co-Pitcher of the Year along with sophomore right-handed pitcher Ben Maynard of Abilene Christian University. Davis set an ENMU record for victories in a season, as he went 11-4 on the mound. He achieved a 4.88 earned run average and struck out 69 batters in 94 innings pitched. Maynard was 9-1 for ACU, with a 3.38 ERA. He recorded 67 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings.

Left fielder Brendan Perrotta of West Texas A&M University, was named the LSC South Freshman of the Year. Perrotta hit .336 with 29 RBIs, nine doubles and six home runs. Britt Bonneau, head coach at Abilene Christian, was chosen LSC South Coach of the Year. Bonneau led ACU to a regular season record of 41-15, including the LSC South title at 16-4.

Overall, 19 players were named to the First Team, 14 players were chosen for the Second Team and five players earned Honorable Mention. Abilene Christian University led the way with eight First Team selections. Angelo State had four First Team picks, while ENMU and Texas A&M University-Kingsville each placed three players on the First Team.

The Greyhounds finished the 2005 season with a 26-27 overall record, including 10-10 in the LSC South (fourth place). ENMU ranked sixth in the overall LSC in pitching with a 6.36 earned run average and tied for second in the LSC with a .958 fielding percentage, as the Greyhounds improved from 19-27-1 (8-13-1 in the LSC South) in 2004.

1st Team All-LSC South

Moore tied for eighth in the Lone Star Conference with his .413 batting average and was second in the LSC with a .513 on-base percentage. He also ranked second in the conference with 31 walks, and tied for third with five triples. He set an ENMU record with a 22-game hitting streak, as he broke the old record of 17 games, set by Dallas McMann in 2002.

He achieved two or more hits 22 times during the season, and scored five runs (one short of the ENMU record) against Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Mar. 30. He was chosen LSC South Hitter of the Week on Apr. 21.

Moore’s 76 hits in 2005 ranked him second on Eastern’s all-time list, while his 52 runs tied for sixth and his 16 doubles tied for sixth. In two seasons with the Greyhounds, Moore recorded a .378 career batting average to go with 130 hits, 90 runs, 27 doubles and 66 walks. He also earned 200 putouts and 244 assists on defense, while committing 23 errors for a .951 fielding percentage. He played in 99 games (98 starts) in Eastern’s 100 games the past two years.

Davis tied for sixth nationally in NCAA Division II with his 11 victories. In addition to setting Eastern’s single season record for wins, he also tied his own single season record for appearances (24). He set ENMU career records with 89 appearances and 20 wins, as he ended his career with a 20-20 overall record. He earned 198 career strikeouts to finish six strikeouts short of the record (204), set by Gabe DeHoyos from 2000 through 2002.

In 2005, Davis’ 4.88 ERA led Eastern’s starters, while his 69 strikeouts ranked second on the team. He threw a total of 94 innings during the season, as he equalled the ENMU record set by Tim King in 1998.

During his four-year career, Davis achieved a 5.07 ERA. He threw 262 2/3 innings for the Greyhounds, including 31 starts and 10 complete games. He recorded 10 career saves, with four each in 2003 and 2005. He allowed just 69 walks against 1,195 batters faced. He was named LSC South Pitcher of the Week once in 2002 (Mar. 11) and three times in 2005 (Feb. 15, Mar. 1, Apr. 26).

Brett SchererScherer was named First Team All-LSC South as a utility player as a result of his solid efforts at third base and on the mound. At the plate, he ranked third on the ENMU squad with a .354 batting average. He recorded 62 hits, scored 38 runs, earned 33 RBIs and was successful on 11 of 16 stolen base attempts. He tied an Eastern single season record with six sacrifice flies and tied a single game record with five hits (5 of 7) against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Mar. 30.

Scherer played in 51 games, all starts, for the Greyhounds. He provided 13 extra-base hits with nine doubles and four triples.

On the mound, Scherer was 3-5 with a 5.71 ERA. He saw action in 12 games, including 11 starts. He threw 58 1/3 innings and registered two complete games.

During his two years at ENMU, Scherer achieved a .341 career batting average, with 67 runs and 51 RBIs. He amassed 112 hits and was 16 of 26 on stolen bases. He was named LSC South Hitter of the Week on Mar. 30, 2004.

Defensively, he earned 228 putouts and 119 assists, with 16 errors, for a .956 career fielding percentage. He did not pitch in 2004, but filled in at catcher that season, following an injury to starter Brian Green (Jr., Fountain Hills, AZ/Central Arizona College).

2nd Team All-LSC South

Josh KuchtaKuchta was named Second Team All-LSC South for the second consecutive season. In 2005, he hit .335 for the Greyhounds, while recording 59 hits, scoring 36 times and providing 23 RBIs. He was credited with eight sacrifice bunts, the third most in ENMU history. He also walked 24 times and stole eight bases on 15 attempts.

He played in 118 games with 98 starts during his ENMU career. He earned a career batting average of .336, and contributed career totals of 115 hits, 60 runs, 55 RBIs, 20 sacrifice bunts and five sacrifice flies. He was chosen LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week on Apr. 6, 2004. In four seasons, he achieved 129 putouts and 243 assists on defense.

Kuchta pitched in 20 games during his career, and recorded a 1-2 record with an 8.31 ERA. He struck out 11 batters and gave up three walks in 30 1/3 innings pitched.

Honorable Mention All-LSC South

Mark WallaceWallace played in an ENMU record 194 games, including a school record 189 starts, in his four seasons with the Hounds. He also set career records for runs (118), hits (207) and runs batted in (128). On defense, he set another school record with 933 career putouts. His 390 putouts this year placed him just two short of the single season record of 392, set by Mike Dunstan in 1997.

Wallace batted .300 for his career. His 207 hits included 40 doubles, six triples and 13 home runs. He hit a combined 120 of 353 (.340) the past two seasons, while playing in all 100 games, with 97 starts. He was named First Team All-LSC South in 2004.

This spring, Wallace hit .330 and led the Greyhounds with 41 RBIs. He struck out only five times in 176 at bats. He walked 10 times, was hit by six pitches and provided three sacrifice flies. On defense, he earned a .988 fielding percentage, with 390 putouts, 22 assists and five errors on 417 chances. His career fielding percentage was .983, with 933 putouts, 55 assists and 17 errors.
