Ashley Sutton from Tyler Junior College Signs National Letter-of-Intent with ENMU Women's Basketball Team

PORTALES, N.M. — Ashley Sutton, a 6’0” forward from Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play women’s basketball at Eastern New Mexico University. Sutton, from Italy, Texas, will be a junior at ENMU during the 2005-06 season.

Sutton averaged 5.6 points per game and shot 33% from 3-point range while at Tyler. She scored a season-high 23 points against Clarendon College and earned All Tournament Team honors at the Thunderbird Classic hosted by New Mexico Junior College.

“Ashley is a very skilled offensive player with great size.” ENMU Co-Head Coach Dustin Klafka said. “She can shoot the ball from the perimeter, off the dribble, and feed the post. I believe Ashley can play anywhere from a shooting guard to a power forward at our level. She will give Zia basketball a quality player with great skill and versatility.”

Eastern New Mexico University won its last four games of 2004-05 to finish the year at 13-14 overall. The Zias concluded the season tied with Texas A&M University Commerce for fourth place in the LSC South at 7-7, but missed out on the LSC Tournament on a tie-breaker. ENMU did well despite playing without the team’s top scorer, senior guard Laci Lee (Portales, NM/Portales HS), for the final 18 games of the season due to a leg injury.

In 2003-04, Eastern earned a 16-12 overall record and tied for second place in the LSC South at 10-4. ENMU’s successful season also included a berth in the LSC Tournament.

“Ashley is really a good shooter.” Co-Head Coach Dan Buzard said. “You give her a good shot and it’s likely to be hit. She’s just a pure shooter.”
