Monica Jasso Signs National Letter-of-Intent with ENMU Women's Cross Country Team

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University head cross country coach Joel
McMullen has announced the signing of Carlsbad High School senior Monica Jasso to a National Letter-of-Intent to run for the Zias next season. Jasso, from Carlsbad, N.M., will be a freshman during the 2005-06 academic year. She is the daughter of Javier and Bertha Jasso.

McMullen and his assistant coach, Matthew Gordillo, have recruited to rebuild and add depth to both the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the upcoming season, focusing primarily on the tremendous amount of talented runners throughout New Mexico. The Zia cross country squad finished ninth in the Lone Star Conference in 2004.

Jasso is strong both academically and athletically. She is in the top third of her graduating class and has received numerous accolades for her academic and athletic achievements. Her honors include: CHS girls’ cross country team captain, 2004; District Championship team member and State qualifier in cross country and track, 2004; New Mexico Girls’ State participant, 2004; Five-year letterman in cross country and four-year letterman in track; President, vice president, class representative and student body historian for the CHS Student Council. She also is a San Jose Catholic Youth Group leader, is a lifeguard and owns and operates a lawn care service during the summer.

“Monica is very intelligent and gifted student-athlete,” Coach McMullen said. “She has a great work ethic, which is reflected by the numerous activities she’s been involved in, while at the same time maintaining great grades in the classroom. She is a solid runner who has tremendous potential to do some great things in her collegiate career. She is a great addition to the Zia squad for next year in every respect.”
