Apalonia Vidaurri Signs National Letter-of-Intent with ENMU Women's Soccer Team

PORTALES, N.M. — Apalonia Vidaurri, a 5’3” goalkeeper from Rio Rancho High School in Rio Rancho, N.M., has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the women’s soccer team at Eastern New Mexico University. Vidaurri will be a freshman at ENMU during the 2005 season.

Vidaurri received four varsity letters while playing soccer at Rio Rancho. She was a goalie throughout her career in high school. For two years she pulled double duty on the team, also seeing time on the field as a forward. In addition to playing soccer, Vidaurri participated in choir.

“I’m pleased to be adding Apalonia to our team,” Head Coach Travis McCorkle said. “Apal is a raw talent who will help strengthen our team and add depth at our goalkeeper position.”

McCorkle added, “Our new graduate assistant, Bill Davis, has lots of experience training goalkeepers and Apal (along with returners Stephanie Sanchez and Amy Holtman) will benefit from his knowledge.”

The 2005 season will be the third year the Zias have competed in intercollegiate soccer. In 2004, ENMU finished the year with an overall record of 9-9-2, including a 2-5-2 record in the Lone Star Conference. The Zias earned 8 points in the LSC standings (three points per win; one point per tie) and fell just one point shy of qualifying for the conference tournament.
