ENMU’s Schiely is First Team All-LSC South, George Receives Honorable Mention

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University’s two returning starters have been selected All-Lone Star Conference South Division for the 2005 season. Lindsay Schiely (Sr., MB, Portland, OR/Clackamas CC) replicated last year’s selection by being chosen to the All-LSC South First Team. Grace George (Jr., MB, Kaaawa, HI/Kahuku HS) was chosen All-LSC South Honorable Mention for the second consecutive season.

Schiely led the 2005 Zias in kills and hitting percentage, accumulating 376 kills and a very efficient .333 hitting percentage. She recorded the second best hitting percentage in the LSC and ranked eighth in the conference in blocks per game, as she recorded 105 blocks in 105 games.

Last week, Schiely was chosen First Team ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District 6, rewarding her for a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a Health and Physical Education major. She has been nominated for the LSC South All-Academic Team.

Schiely recorded a nearly perfect match against Angelo State University on Oct. 8 this year, providing 29 kills and no attacking errors on 46 attacks. In 20 of 27 matches this season, she earned double-digit kills, including two matches with 24 kills and one with 23 kills. Against Southeastern Oklahoma State University, she achieved a personal season-high with 10 blocks.

In 2004, Schiely’s first year at Eastern, she was selected First Team All-LSC South and was named Honorable Mention All-Southwest Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Her 2004 statistics included 398 kills (3.06 per game), a .290 hitting percentage and 111 blocks (085 per game). She achieved 774 kills and 216 blocks during her career. Her career hitting percentage of .310 ranks fifth all-time at ENMU.

George led Eastern in blocks and was second in kills and hitting percentage. She earned 129 total blocks, including 21 block solos. She also recorded 281 kills with a .236 hitting percentage. She contributed a personal season-high 10 blocks against New Mexico Highlands University and had a high of 22 kills against SE Oklahoma. In 2004, George led the LSC with 155 blocks and 1.35 blocks per game. She finished second in the LSC this season with 1.23 blocks per game.

The 2005 campaign was a rebuilding year for ENMU, which finished with an 8-19 overall record, including 3-7 in the LSC South (4th place). It was Eastern’s first losing season after 16 consecutive winning years. ENMU lost five seniors from the 2004 team, which earned an overall record of 25-9 and qualified for Eastern’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
