ENMU’s Dozier Named First Team All-LSC, Funck Receives Honorable Mention

PORTALES, N.M. — Two players who have been with the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team since the program’s first year were named to the All-Lone Star Conference Team for 2005. Megan Dozier (Jr., F, Midland, TX/Midland HS) was selected First Team All-LSC and Anna Funck (Jr., MF, Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) was chosen Honorable Mention All-LSC.

“Both of the girls have proven why they were in that first recruiting class,” Head Coach Travis McCorkle said.

It was Dozier’s second selection to the All-LSC First Team. Her first came in 2003 during her freshman year. In 2004, Dozier was named Second Team All-LSC. This fall, Dozier led the Zias with 19 points scored on six goals and seven assists.

Coach McCorkle said, “I think Megan continues to strike fear in opposing teams. Every time upcoming opponents get a scouting report, Megan’s name tops the list.”

Dozier was second on the team in goal scoring behind Funck and finished in the top ten in the conference in seven categories, including the second best in assists and assist per game. Dozier had two game-winning goals in 2005, with the first occurring in the second game of the season, a 2-1 victory over Mesa State College (Aug. 27). She was credited with an assist on the other goal against MSC. Dozier recorded her second game-winner with a hat trick in Eastern’s 4-0 victory over East Central University on Oct. 14.

Funck
led Eastern with seven goals and was second in assists and points scored, just behind Dozier. Coach McCorkle spoke of her importance to the team.

“Anna is a player that helps our team be a better team on and off the field,” he said. “She makes the players around her look their best by utilizing her passing.”

Funck recorded two game-winning goals. She scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sept. 4. In a 3-0 win over the College of the Southwest on Oct. 2, she put the Zias on the board early for her other game-winner. Funck finished in the top ten in the LSC in five categories. She was named Second Team All-LSC in her first two seasons at ENMU.

ENMU has been progressing successfully in its first three seasons of competition and will be looking to gain its first berth in the LSC Tournament in 2006. McCorkle is looking forward to his two All-LSC players’ senior seasons.

“I know these girls came here with goals in mind and I’m 100% certain that next year they will do everything they can as seniors to reach these goals,” McCorkle said.
