West Texas A&M Outscores ENMU, 52-51 in Overtime, to Claim Wagon Wheel Victory
ENMU Gains 632 Total Yards; Hounds Set School Record with 475 Rushing Yards

CANYON, TEXAS — West Texas A&M University and Eastern New Mexico University teamed up for a scoring spree in their Lone Star Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Canyon, Texas. The teams combined for 1,183 yards, 46 first downs and 103 points, as a crowd of 22,993 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium watched West Texas edge ENMU, 52-51 in overtime, to win the Wagon Wheel game and remain undefeated on the season. WTAMU improved to 7-0, 3-0 in the LSC South, while ENMU fell to 4-3, 4-2 in the LSC South.

Eastern outgained the Buffaloes, 632 to 551 in total offense, with the Hounds setting a school record with 475 rushing yards. The old record of 473 was set against Panhandle State University in 1975. Senior running back Jason Tezeno (Levelland, TX/Levelland HS) led the way with 192 yards on 25 carries. Wide receiver Derrick Hunter (Sr., Lamesa, TX/Lamesa HS) scored on a 62-yard touchdown catch to tie Eastern's record for career touchdown receptions (20), equalling the mark set by Steve Jackson from 1983-84.

The Buffaloes scored with 10:02 left in the regulation to tie the game. Eastern had the final possession of regulation following an interception with 4:41 left. The Greyhounds drove to the Wext Texas 17-yard line, but did not get a chance at a game-winning field goal when officials did not grant a timeout with two seconds remaining.

In overtime, both teams had one possessioin starting 1st-and-10 at the opponents' 25-yard line. WT scored on just two plays, with quarterback Dalton Bell crossing the goal lilne on a 1-yard run. WTAMU kicked the extra point. The Greyhounds used five plays to score, with quarterback Michael Benton (So., Everman, TX/Everman Joe C. Bean HS) providing four carries on the drive, including a 1-yard run. The Hounds went for two points on the conversion, but a pass by Corey White (Sr., CB, Lubbock, TX/Estacado HS) out of the swinging gate formation was intercepted by Kolt Kittley in the end zone.
